Toyota Launches Its New Electric Corolla in the Chinese Market. The Model Priced at R$ 112,000 Arrives Equipped with BYD Battery Capable of Delivering a Range of Up to 616 km.
The new Toyota bZ3, a model produced by the FAW-Toyota joint venture, has started to be sold in China to the first customers. The electric sedan, which uses BYD battery with a slightly larger size than the Corolla, was launched on the 16th of this month and is the second model in the bZ line aimed at the Chinese market, at least for the time being.
Electric Corolla Costs R$ 112,800
Being a success upon its debut, the electric Corolla received more than 5,000 orders within the first 24 hours of pre-sales. The model can already be purchased in three trim levels, with prices that can reach 169,800 yuan, which in direct conversion would be R$ 123,700.
However, customers who purchase the model by July 31 will receive a discount of 15,000 yuan, equivalent to R$ 10,800, thus the final price drops to 154,800 yuan, equivalent to R$ 112,800, the price of a compact model in the country.

Hyundai launches a 7-seater ‘Kombi’ cheaper than Chevrolet Spin, Citroën Aircross, and Tiggo 8 Pro in Brazil; for around R$ 78,500 in conversion without taxes, the Hyundai Stargazer Cartenz features a 1.5 engine, manual or IVT transmission, 205 mm ground clearance, and the SmartSense package that Brazilians don’t have yet, but Indonesia does.
The bZ3 is based on the Japanese automaker’s electric vehicle platform and is produced by the joint venture of Toyota with the state-owned FAW company. A significant highlight in the development of the Electric Corolla is the partnership and use of a BYD battery.
The Chinese company provided its Blade battery for the electric sedan. The Toyota bZ3 measures 4.72 meters in length, approximately 9 cm longer than the Corolla, and has a wheelbase of 2.88 meters. It features the “hammerhead shark” design from the Toyota bZ line, but has a style quite different from what the public is used to seeing in other Toyota models.
BYD Battery Charges from 30% to 80% in Half an Hour
The Electric Corolla can be sold in three versions, with the Elite Pro offering a range of 517 km and a 130 kW motor for R$ 121,700. The Long Range Pro and Long Range Premium versions offer a CLTC range of 616 km and a 180 kW motor for prices of R$ 136,100 and R$ 143,200, respectively. Additionally, the electric Corolla supports fast charging, where the BYD battery charges from 30% to 80% in just 27 minutes with fast direct current charging.
The new model is being produced at the new FAW-Toyota factory in Tianjin, which is an important port city in China located approximately four hours southeast of Beijing. This production unit spans 1.97 million square meters, with construction starting in June 2020. It was officially inaugurated in October of last year and has a capacity to produce 200,000 cars per year.
Could Electric Corolla Come to Brazil?
The launch of the new model in China is part of Toyota’s strategy to become a leader in the electric car market. The company has already announced plans to launch approximately 15 new electric models worldwide by 2025, including seven models from the bZ line.
Toyota is also investing in next-generation battery technologies, such as solid-state components, which promise to significantly enhance the efficiency and performance of electric vehicles.
In Brazil, the expectation is that we won’t see the electric Corolla anytime soon, especially since the model was developed with a focus on the Chinese market. As a result, the automaker has different electrification strategies for each region.
