China Produces Forged Steel Ring Measuring 15 Meters in Diameter and Weighing 150 Tons, Molded Above 1,000 °C, Surpassing the USA and Europe.

In March 2019, the Institute of Metal Research (IMR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences proudly announced the production of the largest and heaviest seamless forged integral ring in the world, measuring 15.6 meters in diameter and weighing 150 tons;

The result is a continuous, homogeneous, and extremely strong structure, which is essential for high-risk sectors like nuclear.

While Europe can produce seamless rings of up to 10 meters, and the United States reaches about 7 meters, China positions itself several steps ahead.

How Manufacturing Works

The forged steel ring is created from a single steel ingot. This initial block is heated in furnaces to over 1,000 °C, reaching temperatures that allow the necessary malleability.

Then, the forging and expansion stage begins. In this process, axial and radial forces are applied under extremely high pressure. The piece is gradually stretched and expanded until the desired shape and size are achieved.

The most important thing is that all of this occurs without welds or joints. The result is a continuous ring, free of weak points that could compromise structural integrity. This homogeneity ensures reliability in critical applications.

Why the Nuclear Sector Needs This

The nuclear industry requires materials with maximum performance. Structures that are part of reactor cores cannot exhibit failures, as a problem would compromise overall safety.

In this scenario, the 15-meter forged steel ring becomes essential. It has been specifically developed to be used in fourth-generation reactors. Its function is to serve as a structural support component capable of withstanding loads of up to 7,000 tons without deformation.

Therefore, more than just a record, this represents an advancement with a direct impact on energy production and technological safety.

Silent Competition Among Powers

The Chinese achievement also reflects a global industrial rivalry. Dominating such technologies isn’t just about showcasing power; it determines which countries are prepared to build and maintain large strategic projects.

In Europe and the United States, there is established capacity in engandmetalworking. However, so far, it has not been possible to achieve diameters close to the 15 meters recorded by China.

This difference reveals the priority that the Asian country has given to investments in infrastructure and industrial innovation.

Moreover, the record has been certified by international organizations. The Guinness World Records has recorded the achievement, confirming the ring produced by Iraeta Energy Equipment as the largest ever manufactured. This places China in a prominent position, reinforcing its image as a technological power.
