Space cooperation between China and Brazil gains prominence with the use of satellites in environmental monitoring, international integration, and projects on the Tiangong station, evidencing joint technological advancement and practical applications in the Amazon and in various strategic areas.
China once again cited Brazil as a relevant partner in space cooperation by highlighting the CBERS Program, a Sino-Brazilian remote sensing initiative used in environmental monitoring, including actions related to the Legal Amazon.
The statement was made by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun at a press conference on Friday, April 24, 2026, a date also marked as China Space Day.
According to Guo, the China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite is an example of international cooperation aimed at practical applications on Earth, such as the protection of tropical forests in South America.

CBERS Program and technological advancement in Brazil
The CBERS Program was born from a technical-scientific partnership between Brazil and China and allowed the country to join the group of nations with technology to generate primary remote sensing data.
These images are used in different areas, including deforestation control, identification of wildfires, monitoring of water resources, agricultural activities, and urban expansion.
In practice, satellites help public agencies, researchers, and environmental institutions monitor changes in land cover with information obtained from Earth observation.
Amazon monitoring with satellite data
In Brazil, Amazon monitoring combines different satellite systems and databases, mainly operated by Inpe, such as Deter and Prodes, used for deforestation alerts and estimates.
CBERS images reinforce this set of information by offering strategic data for environmental analyses, territorial planning, and public inspection policies.
In addition to the Amazon, the program’s data also has applications in studies on agriculture, natural resources, urban growth, mapping of degraded areas, and educational projects.
International cooperation and Tiangong space station
Guo Jiakun also cited the Tiangong space station when arguing that space exploration should not be treated as a dispute between great powers.
“Space is not an arena for competition between great powers. China will continue to work with various countries to promote open space cooperation and advance humanity’s common endeavor to explore outer space,” the spokesperson declared.
The statement occurred in a context where Beijing has expanded the dissemination of international partnerships in the sector, including agreements with African countries and the preparation of Pakistani astronauts for training related to Tiangong.
