China Discovers Giant Uranium Deposit That Could Change The Energy Sector. Discovery Will Also Put Country Ahead Of Global Energy Transition.
With an area of approximately 9,596,961 km², China is one of the countries richest in natural resources, especially concerning strategic minerals. Now, the Asian giant has announced the discovery of a new uranium deposit, often called “radioactive black gold” due to its importance for nuclear energy production. Below, we detail the impact of this discovery and its implications for the global market.
Details About The New Uranium Deposit In China
The China Geological Survey, linked to the Ministry of Natural Resources, announced the discovery of a large uranium deposit in the Ordos Basin, in the city of Jingchuan, as reported by the state news agency Xinhua. Although the exact quantity of the ore has not been disclosed, the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences defines a large deposit as having at least 100,000 tons of uranium.
The relevance of this discovery is due to the fact that it is the first time in the world that a large uranium deposit has been found in a region of aeolian sandstone, a type of geological formation that facilitates the extraction of the ore. Furthermore, the location in Inner Mongolia provides more accessible and less costly mining conditions, making the process more efficient and environmentally sustainable, according to Chinese media.

Drilling began in mid-2017, and high-quality industrial ore samples have been identified in four distinct areas. According to the head of uranium mining at the China Geological Survey, prospecting methods have evolved over time, leveraging old coal and oil data to direct new geological research.
Impacts Of The Discovery On The Global Market And Geopolitics
China already has more than 50 operational nuclear reactors and plans to build more than 100 in the next 10 years. With this, the country seeks to consolidate its leadership in the global energy transition, while strengthening its position in supplying energy to developing nations.
On the other hand, this new uranium reserve attracts the attention of the USA and Europe, who closely monitor nuclear proliferation and the expansion of the Chinese energy sector. Moreover, the discovery could increase tensions with neighboring countries, such as Japan and India, which cautiously observe the growth of China’s nuclear capacity.
China’s presence as a major player in the global uranium market not only reinforces its role in energy security but could also intensify trade and geopolitical disputes, making this resource one of the most strategic today.
