History Of Ford’s Affordable Car

In 1998, Ford needed a replacement for the Escort, and the Focus was introduced in its first generation in Europe. The name came from a concept presented by the Ghia studio at the Geneva Auto Show in 1991. The final product carried elements of the New EDGE design language, which first appeared on the Ka in 1996.

Besides standing out on the streets with its bolder look than direct competitors, Ford’s affordable car also brought a multilink rear suspension system that was unprecedented in its category. It arrived in the United States in 1999, with differences only to comply with local laws.

Inside, it also caught attention for its design, featuring the same style language found on the outside, the New EDGE. It had a play of geometric shapes both in the central area (where the sound system and ventilation were located) and in the cluster area, as well as a beautiful four-spoke steering wheel.

The popular car landed in Brazil only in the year 2000. Produced in Argentina, it had a four-door hatchback and sedan body, in two versions (basic and Ghia), with 1.8 Zetec engines of 115 horsepower in the basic hatch and 2.0 Zetec engines of 130 hp in the other versions, always with a 5-speed manual transmission. In 2002, the popular car received its first facelift, with turn signals integrated into the headlights and new bumpers.

The version of the Ford Focus GL in question is the 1.8 8V 2003, which has a height of 1481 mm, width of 1699 mm, length of 4152 mm, and a wheelbase of 2615 mm that can comfortably carry 5 occupants. The trunk is generous, offering 350 L, and the fuel tank can hold up to 55 L. The front brakes are ventilated discs and the rear brakes are drums.

Always powered by gasoline, Ford’s affordable car features a 1.8 8V engine with front-wheel drive. The model delivers a maximum power of 103 horsepower and torque of 14.6 kgfm associated with a manual transmission. On the outside, the model has an MK1 front, matte black door handles, higher taillights, and front and rear fog lights, along with side and front turn signal repeaters.

Spacious And Very Comfortable

The popular car offers good interior space, with soft-touch materials and fabric on the doors, but it still lacks three-point seat belts due to the car’s age. In the front, we have power windows, but it did not yet come with height-adjustable seats.

In the driver’s seat, we also have controls for position lights, turn signals, front and rear fog lights, and a basic, classic dashboard of an affordable Ford car.

In the passenger seat, we have illuminated glove compartments, something not even found in some 2024 models. As a basic version, the model is quite impressive, even considering its price of less than R$ 23 thousand.
