Corpus Christi 2026 falls on June 4, a Thursday. Find out which capitals will have a holiday, where it is an optional day off, and your labor rights.

Nineteen of the 27 Brazilian capitals have declared Corpus Christi an official holiday on June 4, 2026, a Thursday. The date, which at the federal level has the status of an optional day off — according to MGI Ordinance No. 11.460/2025, from the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services — can be transformed into a holiday by states and municipalities through their own legislation. With the celebration on a weekday close to the weekend, the possibility of a long weekend extends the break until Sunday for a good part of Brazilian workers, according to information from ig.

What changes for civil servants and private sector workers

The suspension of activities is automatic in the federal public sector. Operations are maintained only in services considered essential, such as public security and health. Furthermore, the federal government has defined Friday, June 5, as an optional day off for civil servants, paving the way for a four-day long weekend.

In private companies, the decision on releasing employees depends on each employer or collective labor agreements. Where Corpus Christi is recognized as an official holiday, workers who need to work on that day are entitled to:

  • Double pay for the day worked; or
  • Granting of a compensatory day off on another date

In places where the date is only an optional day off, private companies can choose to operate normally. In these cases, if time off is granted, hours can be compensated through a time bank, provided there is an agreement between the parties.

In the city of São Paulo, Corpus Christi is considered a municipal holiday by Law 14.485/2007, which guarantees the labor rights provided for official holidays.

Corpus Christi 2026: holiday, optional day off, or undefined?

The situation varies greatly among the capitals. While 19 cities have already confirmed a holiday, others are still awaiting a decree or will only adopt the optional day off. See the complete overview:

Holiday vs. optional day off: understand the difference

The two terms are often confused but have quite distinct practical effects. An official holiday has legal backing and mandates the suspension of activities, ensuring labor rights for the employee. An optional day off, on the other hand, is an administrative measure that exempts only public bodies — without the same legal weight as a holiday.

In practice, public offices usually suspend operations or operate on a reduced schedule during optional days off. Private companies, however, are not obligated to follow the same rule and can maintain normal operations.

The origin and traditions of Corpus Christi

The festivity became part of the Catholic Church’s calendar after the disclosure of an episode considered miraculous in Bolsena, a city located in Italy, during the pontificate of Urban IV. According to religious tradition, a host reportedly showed signs of bleeding during a mass, an event that motivated the creation of the celebration.

In Brazil, one of the most emblematic traditions of the date is the making of the famous colorful carpets used in processions. The practice arrived in the country under Portuguese influence and brings together materials such as sawdust, salt, sand, and flowers to create artisanal designs that adorn the streets where religious processions pass.

Next national holidays after Corpus Christi

After June 4, the national calendar still reserves six more holidays until the end of 2026 — most on weekdays, which favors new long weekends throughout the second half of the year:

  1. September 7 — Brazil’s Independence Day (Monday)
  2. October 12 — Our Lady of Aparecida (Monday)
  3. November 2 — All Souls’ Day (Monday)
  4. November 15 — Proclamation of the Republic (Sunday)
  5. November 20 — Black Awareness Day (Friday)
  6. December 25 — Christmas (Friday)

In addition to national holidays, optional days off on dates such as October 28, December 24, and December 31 may also extend rest periods in certain regions of the country.
