Have Questions About Which Used Car to Buy? Check Out the Used Honda HR-V: An Affordable and Highly Praised SUV in the Segment.

The SUV market continues to grow and attract the attention of many consumers. However, due to the high prices of some new models, many Brazilians opt for used vehicles. When choosing a used SUV, consumers typically look for a high driving position, safety, and robustness. In this context, the used Honda HR-V stands out as an affordable and well-rated option. This model offers these desired characteristics and much more, making it an attractive choice for those considering purchasing an SUV.

Affordable Honda SUV Delivers Up to 173 Hp of Power

Launched by the Japanese brand in Brazil in 2015, the Honda HR-V arrived with three trim levels and one engine option, specifically the 1.8 flex with 140 horsepower and 17.4 kgfm of torque, paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or a CVT that simulates seven speeds.

The base LX model came equipped with air conditioning, two airbags, ABS brakes, power steering, traction and stability control, hill start assist, among other items. However, 17-inch alloy wheels, digital climate control, side airbags, and leather seats were part of the EX and EXL variants.

Another advantage of the used Honda HR-V is its well-utilized interior space. It measures 4.29 meters in length, 1.77 m in width, 1.58 m in height, and has a wheelbase of 2.61 m, enough to make a trip with four adults comfortably.

The 437-liter trunk is among the best in the segment, outperforming the Nissan Kicks with 432 L and VW T-Cross (373 L). In 2018, the affordable Honda SUV was slightly restyled and gained the Touring version in the automotive market, with a 1.5 engine powered solely by gasoline producing 173 horsepower and 22.4 kgfm, coupled to a CVT transmission that simulates seven speeds. The HR-V continued until 2021, as the second generation arrived the following year.

The 1.8 flex version of the Honda HR-V, though less powerful with 140 hp compared to the 173 hp of the 1.5 turbo version, still has a good presence in the market. In terms of fuel efficiency, the 1.8 flex registers 7.1 km/l in the city and 8.5 km/l on the highway when fueled with ethanol, and 10.5 km/l in urban conditions and 12.1 km/l on the highway with gasoline. The 1.5 turbo version, on the other hand, offers 8.8 km/l in the city and 9.8 km/l on the highway with ethanol, and 12.7 km/l and 13.9 km/l, respectively, with gasoline.

Regarding prices, analysis of the main used vehicle websites shows that the values for HR-Vs from the early years of launch start around R$ 75,000, going up to R$ 160,000 for the more equipped models until 2021. Platforms like OLX and Webmotors are popular for those looking to find this affordable Honda SUV in the automotive market.

What to Consider When Buying Your Used Honda HR-V

It is not uncommon to find complaints about the paint of the Honda HR-V, an affordable SUV. The most frequent issues include peeling and even spots of oxidation and rust, which often require repainting the affected areas.

During a thorough inspection, these issues can discourage potential buyers, raising suspicions that the vehicle may have suffered some collision. The front suspension of a used Honda HR-V is also a concern that deserves attention, as it is common to experience noises due to wear in the stabilizer bar bushings and the links.

Another recurring problem is related to the belt tensioner, which maintains the ideal tension in the distribution system. The cost of the alternator belt is over R$ 380, while the tensioner pulley can be found for about R$ 690.

The electronic parking brake, operated by a button on the central console, can also fail, with evident symptoms such as a yellow light permanently on and a flashing red light when engaging the brake. The solution usually involves replacing the switch, with an average cost of the original part being R$ 280.

It is important to also check if the vehicle has undergone any significant recalls, including the replacement of the wheel hub bolts for 2015 models, the brake system bleeding in 2018, and the fuel pump repair in 2019. According to Bruno, a former owner of a Honda HR-V G1 EX, one of the main positives of the SUV is its generous interior space.

With the fuel tank positioned under the front seats, there is extra space beneath the rear seat, ideal for storing bags and other items, enhancing comfort in the rear area. The engine/brake/transmission combination is adequate, providing sufficient and comfortable performance for family trips without promising great savings or exceptional performance.
