Blackout at Microsoft Shows the Importance of Data Protection and Security in Cloud Computing. Issues Affect Businesses and Require Caution When Hiring Providers.

Microsoft outage highlights the importance of backup and security in the cloud. Interruptions harm corporations and demand attention in supplier selection.

Overload at Microsoft: How to Prevent Loss of Business Information? Unresponsive interface. This was the situation faced by several professionals on their Microsoft machines on the morning of this Friday after issues with the security protocols of CrowdStrike, a company that provides data protection services related to cloud computing for Microsoft and many other corporations around the world.

Problems of this nature can, unfortunately, affect businesses of different sizes and sectors, emphasizing the importance of investing in secure solutions that protect corporate data and reduce risks associated with failures or hacker invasions. Microsoft, owner of Windows, one of the most affected by the recent technological blackout, reported that the problem occurred in its cloud software Azure, which uses the American tool known as Falcon.

Impact on Cloud Servers

Due to the failure, its services were interrupted, directly affecting important data that was stored in this cloud system, which may include customer information, for example. Although the problem was resolved in a few hours, certain remnants still persisted in some servers, highlighting the pros and cons of cloud computing for the market.

With the growing corporate digitalization, the cloud market has significantly increased in favor of greater security and optimization in information management. Data from McKinsey shows that cloud computing can generate up to US$ 3 trillion in cost reduction and optimization, as well as contribute to the creation of new business models by 2030.

The Importance of Security and Optimization

Factors such as agility, efficiency, better cost-effectiveness, and, mainly, security, have led more organizations to understand the importance of adopting cloud management. It is no wonder that large corporations, established in the market, increasingly explore the functionalities of this model in service provision.

On the other hand, even with a vast awareness in the market, it is crucial to consider several aspects before choosing the provider, to avoid a misguided hiring. After all, there are plenty of reports of cloud service companies trying to convince clients that they have the best offer, when, in fact, they lack the necessary specialization and knowledge.

The Risks of Misguided Hiring

This reality has led many users to have a negative experience, increasing risks for the business. Therefore, more than analyzing the price, when choosing a cloud provider, it is essential to pay attention to certain elements.

Here are seven of them:

1. Ownership and Control: Some companies offer total management of operations to attract clients. But is this really advantageous? After all, the goal of hiring a cloud server is to obtain support in management and maintenance, optimizing the team’s time and ensuring security.

2. Management and Backup: It is vital to verify if the provider has a dedicated team for cloud management, ensuring the continuity of daily operations. In addition, it is crucial to know the frequency of backups to guarantee data protection.

Scalability and Flexibility

3. Scalability and Flexibility: This is an aspect that also deserves attention. One of the attractions of the cloud is the option to pay only for what you use. However, can the company ensure capacity expansion when necessary? It is essential to check if the service provided is not a Data Center, which requires a physical point and has high costs for expansion.

4. Price: This is a sensitive point for corporations, which seek the best cost-effectiveness. However, it is essential to evaluate whether the price covers all regulatory compliance, and in the case of foreign cloud, whether the pricing is aligned with the currency of the parent company, avoiding discrepancies when converted to Brazil.

5. Geographical Location: What is the origin of the cloud? This technology can operate from various locations, so it is essential to request demonstration of performance, verifying factors such as speed, latency, and transition.

6. Integration and Compatibility: Each company has its own software. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that the cloud can integrate with the tool used and, in case of system changes, can export data effectively.

Provider History and Reputation

7. History and Reputation: Research the brand. It is essential to confirm whether the provider has experience in delivering services, what its market evaluation is, and obtain references from successful projects.

Currently, we live in a ‘business cannibalism’, where competing groups adopt unethical practices. In this scenario, anything goes, including offering services below price, which may seem advantageous to the client, but diverts attention from crucial technical aspects in hiring.

This neglect in choosing the cloud can expose the company to security risks, such as cyberattacks, data exposure, and operational interruptions, compromising business performance. Therefore, it is vital to be careful, ensuring that promises will be fulfilled. The cloud demonstrates that, for technology, the sky is not the limit. However, it is necessary to be attentive to the storms that may arise when the provider does not have full control of the situation and gives an inaccurate weather forecast.
