Petrobras, one of the biggest names in the global energy sector, continues to expand its legacy of remarkable discoveries, ranging from pre-salt to the largest gas reserve. In its latest achievement, the company confirmed, in partnership with Ecopetrol, the presence of a gigantic gas reserve in Colombia, reaffirming its technical leadership and ability to operate in challenging environments.

The discovery in Colombia by Petrobras and Ecopetrol, in the Sirius field, Guajira Basin, is historic. With an estimated 6 trillion cubic feet of gas, this is the largest reserve found in the country in three decades, with the potential to double Colombian reserves and guarantee energy security for decades. Production is expected to begin in 2029 or 2030, after infrastructure adjustments and resolution of legal issues.

Pre-salt: a game changer for Brazil

From pre-salt to the largest gas reserve: Petrobras discovers 6 trillion cubic feet of gas in Colombia and leads global energy revolution

Since 2006, when the pre-salt was discovered, Petrobras has transformed Brazil's energy dynamics. Located in ultra-deep waters, these reserves not only highlighted the high quality of Brazilian oil, but also propelled the country to the position of one of the largest global energy producers. Currently, the pre-salt accounts for more than 70% of national production and continues to be an essential strategic and economic asset for Brazil.

Sergipe Deep Waters: a new natural gas hub

Another milestone is the Sergipe Águas Profundas project, which aims to transform the Sergipe coast into a natural gas hub. The exploitation of these reserves, which are already at an advanced stage of development, is crucial to meeting the growing demand for clean energy and increasing Brazil's energy self-sufficiency.

Petrobras' global expansion and technical leadership

In addition to domestic discoveries, Petrobras has expanded its international presence with strategic initiatives ranging from pre-salt oil to Colombia's largest gas reserve. The company recently announced new projects in São Tomé and Príncipe, in the Gulf of Guinea, in addition to consolidating operations in countries such as Namibia, South Africa and Argentina. In Latin America, Petrobras is also targeting expansion in the Vaca Muerta region in Argentina and new gas opportunities in Bolivia.

These initiatives not only reinforce Petrobras' technical capacity, but also demonstrate its commitment to balancing the exploration of new reserves with the global energy transition.

Summary of Petrobras' main discoveries

Pre-salt (Brazil): Reserves discovered in 2006, essential for Brazil's global position in the oil and gas sector.

Sergipe Águas Profundas (Brazil): New natural gas hub under development.

Tupi (Brazil): One of the largest pre-salt reserves, discovered in 2007.

Colombia: The country's largest natural gas reserve in 30 years.

Sao Tome and Principe, Namibia and South Africa: Expansion into strategic areas of Africa.

Latin America: Focus on Argentina (Vaca Muerta) and Bolivia.

Petrobras continues as the protagonist in the energy transition and in the exploration of resources, with discoveries ranging from pre-salt to the largest gas reserve, reaffirming its position in the global market.

But what does this mean for Brazil, for Brazilians, since it was discovered in another country?

I hope the government doesn't break our oil company, so many resources and sweat from our people invested in it.

The same thing that happens in any multinational company. The profit from the activity is sent to the host country, in the case of Petrobras, to Brazil!
