During a recent conference, Elon Musk pointed out the real reason why many people still do not buy electric cars, even with the increase in supply and technology. For him, the problem is in the consumer’s pocket — and Tesla already has a plan to change that.
During the second quarter of 2025 earnings call, Elon Musk made a direct statement about the main obstacle to the expansion of electric cars. For him, the problem is not people’s interest but income.
“The desire to buy an electric car is very strong, but people do not have enough money in their bank accounts to buy one,” he said.
The Tesla CEO’s statement had a strong impact in the United States, sparking a debate about the disparity between the growing number of electric models on the market and the low purchasing power of much of the population.

For this reason, Musk made it clear that the company is seeking a practical solution: to launch a cheaper version of the Model Y.
Tesla Promises Affordable Car
According to Musk himself, the new entry-level car will actually be a modified version of the current Model Y. It is not a completely new model.
The strategy aims to cut costs and accelerate the launch, which could occur as early as 2026.
In addition, Musk revealed that the new model will use a low-cost platform, which should further reduce production prices.
Robotaxis and New Sources of Income
During the earnings presentation, the businessman reiterated the robotaxi plan. According to him, Tesla owners will be able to rent out their vehicles when they are not using them. “It will be like Airbnb for cars,” he said.
This idea is part of the company’s vision to transform electric cars into a source of income as well.
The most important thing, according to Musk, is to offer new options to make electric cars viable not only technologically but also financially for consumers.
