Elon Musk Advocates Replacing Fighter Jets with Drones. Billionaire Claims F-35s Are Outdated and Highly Expensive. U.S. Government Has Already Exceeded Billions of Budget with Models.

Elon Musk’s statements have always attracted media attention; however, now that the billionaire businessman will have a role in the Donald Trump administration, his remarks may signal more than just personal opinions, suggesting paths to be taken by the White House starting next year. Now, Elon Musk advocates replacing F-35 fighter jets with drones.

Elon Musk’s Critiques of the F-35 Fighter Jets

Appointed by Donald Trump to lead a commission aimed at reducing government spending, Musk directly criticized the F-35, the cutting-edge combat aircraft of the U.S. Air Force, stating that the planes are outdated in the drone era.

On his platform X, last Monday (25), Elon Musk advocates replacing fighter jets with drones, stating that piloted combat aircraft are nothing but relics of the past and unnecessarily risk pilots’ lives.

Billionaire Elon Musk criticized the F-35, considered one of the most advanced fighter jets in the U.S. Air Force. He argued that the aircraft’s design is flawed by trying to meet too many demands in a single project, resulting in an expensive and inefficient machine.

His provocative opinion was accompanied by a video showing hundreds of drones performing coordinated maneuvers just a few meters off the ground, emphasizing the technological superiority of unmanned systems.

Elon Musk advocates replacing fighter jets with drones and Donald Trump, the future President of the United States, has also expressed criticism of the F-35, highlighting the high costs of development and maintenance of the aircraft. He suggested that the government should look for more economical and efficient alternatives for the country’s air defense.

Why the F-35 Fighter Jet Criticized by Musk Is So Expensive?

Since its introduction in 2015, the F-35 has been a landmark in American military aviation, but not without controversies. Recently, contracts for exporting the fifth-generation stealth fighter have been signed with Romania, Poland, and Germany, expanding its global presence. However, Elon Musk advocates replacing fighter jets with drones, and critics point to the complexity and high costs involved as significant barriers.

Mauro Gilli, a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, emphasized that the true factor driving up the cost of the F-35 lies in its software and electronic components, not in the fact that it is manned. According to Gilli, a reusable drone would require the same robust and advanced technologies that the F-35 possesses, keeping the cost high.

U.S. Government Has Already Spent US$ 180 Billion Over Budget on the F-35

Elon Musk’s comments seem to have a clear purpose. He will be responsible for cutting unnecessary expenses, and the F-35 development program may be one of the first targets of the businessman.

The estimate is that the project commissioned by the U.S. government is at least a decade behind due to various technical failures. Furthermore, US$ 180 billion has already been spent above the budget proposed by the White House.

Even so, the U.S. government chose to continue the efforts because it evaluated that it was too significant an investment to simply abandon. So far, just over a thousand F-35s have been delivered and are being utilized by the country. Training exercises and simulations suggest that the F-35 is highly capable, with one report stating that in realistic test scenarios, it shot down enemy aircraft at a ratio of 20 to 1.

Despite the good results on the battlefield, perhaps the White House’s perspective has changed as Elon Musk advocates replacing fighter jets with drones. If Musk’s idea prevails, we will likely see a U.S. fleet composed of more drones and fewer fighter jets.
