New Elon Musk’s Supercomputer Valued at US$ 10 Billion Installed in Just 19 Days. Supercomputer with Thousands of GPUs Promises to Boost AI Industry and Disrupt Others in the Market.

A supercomputer with thousands of GPUs was rapidly created for xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk, focusing on artificial intelligence development. The billionaire positioned xAI as a direct competitor to OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Elon Musk’s supercomputer reportedly required an investment of nearly US$ 10 billion, illustrating Musk’s ambition to position himself as a key player in AI. Even Nvidia’s CEO was impressed; check out the details!

Understand the Goal of the Supercomputer with Thousands of GPUs

According to information provided by the French portal JeuxVideo to IGN, this supercomputer by Elon Musk was designed to perform massive calculations related to artificial intelligence, a growing necessity in the industry.

The project, completed at lightning speed, not only highlights the billionaire’s innovation capability but also the current challenges in the race for computational power and artificial intelligence.

Even Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, expressed admiration for the speed with which the supercomputer with thousands of GPUs was completed, explaining that this type of project usually takes four years.

According to JeuxVideo, the main difference here is that Musk and his team reduced this period to less than three weeks (19 days), a groundbreaking achievement in the industry. According to Huang, nothing like this has been done before.

The design of Elon Musk’s supercomputer did not only involve assembling components but also constructing an entire factory. This factory, where Nvidia H200 GPUs are housed, was equipped with advanced liquid cooling systems and power supply to manage the 100,000 GPUs needed for this type of intensive computing.

Supercomputer Uses the Fastest GPUs on the Market

The H200 GPU from Elon Musk’s supercomputer is the fastest on the market according to Nvidia. This model is currently at the center of many projects related to artificial intelligence.

Nvidia GPUs have become a scarce resource due to the AI boom. This has driven up prices and made it difficult to purchase large quantities of these processors.

The most notable element of this supercomputer with thousands of GPUs is not only the speed of assembly but also the implementation of the first AI training phase on this supercomputer.

Transitioning from the conceptual phase to functional use in such a short time is an impressive feat, especially since Nvidia estimates that it typically takes an average of three years just to plan a similar data center.

The speed of this project raised questions about how Musk and Nvidia managed to collaborate to achieve this feat. Huang highlighted that the last year of a project like this is often spent on installation and commissioning of equipment, a step that Musk’s team was able to significantly shorten.

Musk’s Company Becomes a Player Capable of Competing with Giants

The coordination between xAI and Nvidia certainly played a crucial role, although the exact details of this collaboration remain unclear.

This achievement is significant not only for what it represents in terms of technical capability but also for what it suggests about the future of AI. The computational requirements for training and running artificial intelligence models are becoming increasingly enormous.

The ability to rapidly build infrastructure tailored to these needs provides a significant strategic advantage in a highly competitive industry. With this supercomputer from Elon Musk, xAI becomes a player capable of competing with giants like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. Accelerating the development of such infrastructures could also inspire other tech companies and rethink their construction and optimization processes to keep pace.
