Four 24-meter suction sails that generate up to 7 times more lift than traditional sails have been installed on a Maersk oil tanker. The autonomous system can reduce consumption by up to 20% and is already recording savings of up to 5.4 tons of fuel per day at sea, with annual cuts potentially reaching thousands of tons on a single vessel.
According to portos&navios, handling large project cargo is know-how that has been explored by the public port. Earlier this year, large transformers and generators were also shipped.
For the unloading, the ship’s own cranes were used, along with special trailers for transporting the pieces to the storage yard. The port operation was carried out by the operators Simetria Logística and Santos Brasil, the lessee of the General Cargo Terminal at the Port of Imbituba.
The equipment will be transported to the Honda Energy Wind Farm in the city of Xangri-Lá (RS), where there are already nine wind generators. Inaugurated in 2014 by Honda Automobiles’ subsidiary in Brazil, the park produces 100% clean and renewable energy that is distributed to the factory, offices, and the company’s research and development center. Since its inception, the park has prevented the emission of more than 24 thousand tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
