The Shortage Of Qualified Professionals In The IT Sector In Brazil Puts Critical Data Security At Risk, Including Sensitive Government Information.

Brazil is facing a mega challenge: the shortage of labor in the IT sector (Information Technology). With the lack of professionals in the IT sector in Brazil, opportunities in large companies in the country are being redirected to qualified foreign professionals, who do not miss the opportunities offered by Brazilian startups.

According to a report prepared in 2023 by Google for Startups, there is a projected deficit of 530,000 IT professionals here in Brazil, due to the imbalance between the lack of new talents trained in the area and the high demand for jobs in the IT sector.

Skill Shortage In The IT Sector In Brazil: Absence Of New Professionals Opens Space For Foreigners To Fill The Available Positions In Brazil

The skill shortage in the IT sector has one cause: high demand for technological services and solutions and a lack of specialized labor. And while there were many professionals before, nowadays the scenario is different!

As companies from various sectors evolve, the search for new technologies increases, as a way for the company to prepare to embrace a new market, which is much more modern, technological, and automated.

This leads to an increased demand for qualified professionals to work in areas such as software development, data analysis, and other network-related services, as a means of finding the best professionals who can handle the challenge.

The deficit indicated in the Google for Startups report is also attributed to the fact that Brazil’s educational system still lacks the ideal infrastructure to train new IT professionals.

According to the Brazilian Association of Information Technology and Communication Companies, BRASSCOM, from 2021 to 2025, only 53,000 professionals will graduate in IT each year, meaning that the labor shortage in the IT sector will persist for some time.

Difficulty In The DF: Labor Shortage Of IT Professionals Affects The Brazilian Capital

Carlos Jacobino, the current president of the Federation of Information Industries of the Federal District – SINFOR/DF, reported that the lack of qualified labor in the IT sector in Brazil is a problem that has been dragging on for years.

According to Jacobino, during the recruitment of professionals, some positions require very specific qualifications. “The best professionals are sought after by foreign companies, which makes supply in the DF more difficult,” added the president of SINFORD/DF.

Currently, there is a need to train more than 100,000 IT professionals in Brazil to work in the DF, as it is extremely important to protect critical government data, according to the National Confederation of Industry, CNI.

Besides The Labor Shortage, There Is A Lack Of Senior Professionals In The IT Sector In Brazil

The labor shortage is not only of new professionals in the IT sector but also of senior professionals, that is, those with more experience who have been in the market longer. The lack of these senior professionals also affects the training of new professionals, according to Ciro Jacob, founder and CEO of Meu RH 360.

“With the increase in demand for professionals in the field and the devaluation of the real, those working in technology who are better prepared, with fluent English, have ended up being hired by multinationals, by companies in other countries that are willing to pay very little for this resource. It is cheap for Americans to hire in Brazil or India,” explained Ciro.

Ciro Jacob also talked about the trend called “juniorization,” which is when a professional self-designates as senior, yet is still at a junior level. “Some self-designate as seniors, but in reality, they are at the level of junior or mid-level. If we don’t take action, this deficit will continue to grow. We will see more and more junior professionals, without experience, in the national market, while our more qualified talents will seek opportunities in foreign companies,” Jacob emphasized.

Artificial Intelligence And Its Impact On The IT Sector In Brazil

According to research conducted by the International Labor Organization, around 37% of jobs in Brazil could be affected by the new wave of artificial intelligence (AI), impacting more than 37 million Brazilians. Professor and coordinator of the Information Technology courses at Centro Universitário Uniceplac, Washington Fábio de Souza Ribeiro, spoke about this impact:

“Sectors such as information security and artificial intelligence are particularly vulnerable due to their strategic importance,” and explained that the need to protect government data “makes the shortage of cybersecurity specialists a significant risk.”

The professor also explained that “the lack of qualified professionals in artificial intelligence could limit the ability to implement innovative technologies that are essential for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of public services.”
