The Ministry of Education (MEC), in partnership with CAPES and universities across the country, has opened applications for the Professional Master’s Degree in Arts – PROFARTES, governed by Edital nº 4/2025. In total, there are 317 free placesfor enrollment in the first semester of 2026. This is a stricto sensu formation recognized by CAPES, aimed at qualifying teachers from the public education system.
As highlighted by the national coordination of the program, based at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU), the initiative aims to strengthen arts education in Brazil:
“Our goal is to provide Basic Education teachers with a critical and creative training space that directly impacts students’ learning”, said Professor Rosimeire Gonçalves dos Santos, coordinator of PROFARTES.

Objective Of The Free Course From The MEC And Course Load
The PROFARTES master’s program lasts for 24 months, with 420 hours of activities. Of this total, 360 hours are in-person at affiliated institutions, and 60 hours are in EAD format, through online courses. The program includes classes, seminars, discussion forums, and research guidance.
The degree awarded is a Master’s in Arts, with national validity and official recognition from MEC. Additionally, students will be required to develop research applied to the school reality, strengthening teaching practices in the classroom during their enrollment period.
Places And Availability
The edital offers a total of 317 places distributed across universities in various regions of Brazil. Among the participating institutions are: UFMG, UFBA, UFPA, UFPB, UFAM, UFRN, UNESP, UnB, UFU, UDESC, IFG, URCA, UFMS, and UFMA. Each higher education institution (IES) organizes its own classes and may adopt specific criteria for quotas and affirmative action.

- UnB (Brasília/DF): 32 places
- UFAM/UEA (Manaus/AM): 53 places
- UFPA (Belém/PA): 27 places
- UFBA (Salvador/BA): 18 places
- UFU (Uberlândia/MG): 20 places

Selection Process
The national admission exam will take place in two stages:
- Project Analysis with Memorial – eliminatory character, where the teaching trajectory and research proposal will be evaluated.
- Interrogation Exam – classificatory and eliminatory, through an interview conducted by professors from the chosen institution.
For approval, it is necessary to achieve a minimum score of 7.0 in both stages. The final classification will take into account the arithmetic average of the two phases.
The edital also provides for reserved places for quotas, varying by university: Black, Indigenous, Quilombola, transgender individuals, and people with disabilities will be able to compete in specific modalities.
Requirements For Application
Teachers in active service in Basic Education who teach Arts in the classroom can participate, with the requirement of a degree in Teaching in Arts or related fields recognized by MEC.
Professional Master’s Course Offered By The MEC – Ministry Of Education
PROFARTES encompasses three major areas: Visual Arts, Music, and Performing Arts (including Theater and Dance). Some institutions, such as IFG, UDESC, UNESP, UFPB, UFRN, UFU, UFMS, and URCA, did not divide their places by area but accept candidates from all artistic languages. Thus, the program widely encompasses the production and teaching of arts in Brazil.
