French Startup Aims to Automate Video Editing with Artificial Intelligence and Has Already Raised Over US$ 37 Million in Funding

A French startup is at the center of a new controversy involving the use of artificial intelligence in the audiovisual sector, directly affecting video editors.

Moments Lab, a technology company focused on AI-driven videos, has announced a new funding round that raised US$ 24 million. With this, the total raised by the startup exceeds US$ 37 million.

Automation in Cinema and Job Reduction for Video Editors

Moments Lab is developing a tool called MXT-2, described as an AI-based movie library.

The software collects and organizes human-created images, categorizing them by themes, actors, and locations.

This type of task was previously performed by professionals on set or during editing, typically in entry-level roles in the industry.

Now, with the new features, the company wants to take an even bolder step. Moments Lab plans to create a tool called “Agentic AI”, which would function as an autonomous assistant.

The idea is to enable the software to automatically edit videos from raw footage, based solely on text commands.

Impacts on the Editing Profession

If this plan is successful, the role of video editors could be profoundly transformed. AI would deliver a preliminary edit, and professionals would only be responsible for final adjustments. This scenario raises questions about the future of the profession.

According to the startup itself, it is still uncertain whether the assistant will take the place of an experienced editor or if the role will be eliminated altogether.

The uncertainty worries those working in the field, especially in light of the constant advance of these technologies.

Reactions from the Industry

The adoption of AI in the audiovisual sector is not an isolated phenomenon. The technology has already spread to other areas, and according to experts, the most vulnerable jobs are precisely the junior-level positions.

These positions are seen as the first to be eliminated in automation processes.

Recently, international animator unions declared a state of emergency regarding the use of generative AI.

For the representatives of these professionals, the unchecked growth of these tools threatens not only jobs, but also the quality of the content produced.

More Revenue, Fewer People

In statements to Business Insider, Philippe Petitpont, co-founder of Moments Lab, confirmed that the company’s focus is not on creativity but on financial efficiency. According to him, the new technology can generate revenue streams with less need for personnel.

Petitpont also revealed that one of the company’s clients already intends to reduce the number of hired editors thanks to the adoption of the system.

For him, traditional editing work is considered “very tedious” and inefficient.

Risks and Doubts

Even though the technology still faces challenges, such as bugs and difficulties in large-scale application, the impact can already be felt.

Even without mass use by major studios, tools like those from Moments Lab have the potential to drive down salaries, put pressure on human teams, and negatively influence the quality of audiovisual material.

The movement by Moments Lab represents yet another sign of how artificial intelligence is being used to restructure the job market — not always for the benefit of professionals. For many, the primary motivation remains only profit.
