Final Works of the First Phase Include Sections Between Baturité and Caucaia, Highlighting the Challenging Relief of the Baturité Massif.
The last two sections of the first phase of the construction of the Transnordestina Railway in Ceará will be contracted by October, according to information released by Transnordestina Logística S.A. (TLSA). The sections comprise lots 9 and 10, between the cities of Baturité, Aracoiaba, and Caucaia. The service contracting takes place in the same month that the first operational section of the railway will be inaugurated, connecting Bela Vista do Piauí to Iguatu (CE).
Lot 10, which connects Aracoiaba to Caucaia and is 51 km long, is expected to have the contract signed by the end of September. Lot 9, which links Baturité and Aracoiaba, is scheduled for the end of October and is considered by TLSA to be the most complex due to the mountainous terrain of the Baturité Massif.
Where Will the Last Contracted Sections Go Through?
The final stage of the first phase in Ceará includes two important regions: the Baturité Massif (lot 9) and the area near the state capital Fortaleza, in Caucaia (lot 10). These locations are strategic to ensure the complete connection of the railway to the Port of Pecém, enhancing cargo transportation and regional development.

How Much Will Be Invested and What Are the Next Steps?
In total, investments to complete the 1,206 km of the Transnordestina surpass R$ 15 billion, with funding coming from public and private sources. TLSA has already received an initial tranche of R$ 1.4 billion from the Northeast Development Fund (FDNE), released during President Lula’s visit to the city of Missão Velha in July of this year.
It is expected that an additional R$ 1 billion will be released in 2025, totaling R$ 2.4 billion for the year. By 2027, an additional R$ 1.6 billion will be gradually released to finalize the work, which is expected to be fully completed by September 2027 — 21 years after its start.
Why Is It Important to Complete the Transnordestina Railway?
The completion of the Transnordestina is essential for the economic development of the Northeast, especially in agricultural and industrial areas of Piauí and Ceará. The railway will enable the transportation of grains and various cargo, reducing logistics costs and increasing the competitiveness of the region.
Each train of the Transnordestina can remove up to 380 trucks from the highways, relieving traffic and improving road infrastructure, as well as representing a significant environmental advance by reducing pollutant gas emissions.
Is the Investment in the Transnordestina Railway Worth It?
Experts point out that investment in railway infrastructure, such as the Transnordestina, generates lasting benefits for the economy and society. The reduction of transportation costs increases the competitiveness of Northeastern products and creates business and direct and indirect job opportunities in the benefited cities.
Furthermore, the development of dry ports, such as those in Iguatu, Missão Velha, and Quixeramobim, further reinforces the importance of the railway as a driver of regional development.
