Global End of the Focus Marks Ford’s Strategic Shift and Reinforces the Advancement of Electrified SUVs in the Market.

After nearly three decades in production, the Ford Focus has officially left the global assembly lines.

The last example of the compact hatch, a white five-door car produced in Saarlouis, Germany, was completed in November of this year, concluding a story of 27 years and over 12 million units sold worldwide.

Global Production of the Focus Comes to an End

Ford had already announced in 2022 that it would cease production of the Focus in 2025, while simultaneously evaluating the future of the Saarlouis plant, dedicated to the model since the 1970s.

With the end of the line, the American manufacturer confirms yet another step in its strategic reorientation in Europe, focusing on SUVs, trucks, and electrified vehicles.

The decision follows the same path that had already retired other passenger cars from the brand on the continent, such as Mondeo and Fiesta, whose productions ended in 2022 and 2023, respectively, in light of declining interest in traditional sedans and hatches.

In a statement to the European press, Ford justified the end of the Focus by a shift in investment priorities and the need to improve profitability.

According to the company, resources will now be directed to next-generation platforms with greater growth potential in segments where the brand sees more return.

In a statement, the company said it is “redirecting resources to next-generation platforms that promise innovation and greater growth”, emphasizing the focus on projects with higher margins.

Significant Presence on Brazilian Streets

Although the last Focus was produced in Germany, the end of the line also closes a significant chapter for the Brazilian market.

The model began being sold in Brazil in 2000, imported from Argentina, and remained in the brand’s catalog until 2019, when Ford decided to cease production in General Pacheco, without a direct successor.

Throughout 19 years of presence in the country, the Focus established itself as one of the most recognized compact hatches among Brazilian consumers, competing directly with the Volkswagen Golf and, at different times, with models like Chevrolet Vectra/Cruze hatch, Fiat Bravo, and Peugeot 308.

The national journey included hatch and sedan bodies and various engine and transmission configurations, including automatic versions that were marked by issues with the Powershift automated transmission, cited by analysts as one of the factors contributing to declining sales in the region.

When it decided to withdraw the Focus from the South American market, Ford itself indicated a change in public appetite.

Interest has shifted towards compact and medium SUVs, as well as trucks, shortening the commercial space for sedans and compact hatches.

Ford’s Strategy: Focus on SUVs and Electrification

The end of Focus production did not happen in isolation.

In Europe, Ford has been restructuring its lineup to reduce the offering of traditional passenger cars and increase the share of electrified SUVs and crossovers.

The Mondeo was discontinued in 2022, after nearly 30 years, while the Fiesta had its last unit produced in July 2023, paving the way for an electric vehicle center at the Cologne plant in Germany.

At the same time, the brand chose the Valencia, Spain plant as a priority location to manufacture models based on a new electric architecture starting in the second half of this decade.

Meanwhile, Saarlouis was left without a confirmed new product after the end of the Focus, and Ford has indicated that vehicle production at the site would cease in 2025, retaining only part of the jobs while seeking an investor for the industrial complex.

In the field of electrics, the company has bet on crossovers like the Explorer EV and Capri, both based on Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform and produced in Cologne.

However, demand for these models has been below expectations, leading to reduced shifts and the announcement of cuts of up to 1,000 jobs at the German unit amid a scenario of slower growth in the electric market in Europe.

Possible Return of the Focus Name in 2027

Despite the end of the compact hatch, the name “Focus” may return to Ford’s portfolio in a new configuration.

Various international automotive publications report that the manufacturer is working on a SUV with a size similar to the Focus, set to be launched in 2027 and produced in Valencia, Spain.

According to these reports, the future model would be a mid-size crossover positioned between the Ford Puma and Kuga in the European market, utilizing the C2 platform already used by the Focus itself, the Bronco Sport, and the Maverick truck.

The proposal would offer a “multi-energy” powertrain lineup, with hybrid and fully electric versions, in line with Ford’s recent strategy of combining combustion and electrification within the same project.

For now, the automaker has not officially confirmed the use of the Focus name on the future SUV.

Executives have publicly announced that the company is working on smaller and more affordable vehicles to complement the range of electric and hybrid models in Europe and recapture the space left by models like the Focus and Fiesta.

Shrinking of Medium Hatches

The end of production of the Focus also helps illustrate the transformation of the medium hatch segment.

In Europe, the category still includes models like Volkswagen Golf, Toyota Corolla, Peugeot 308, Opel Astra, BMW Series 1, and Audi A3, but the market share of these cars has been decreasing as compact SUVs and crossovers gain ground.

In Brazil, the movement has been even more intense.

The majority of conventional medium hatches have disappeared, and the niche is now practically limited to imported sports versions, such as the VW Golf GTI, Honda Civic Type R, Toyota GR Corolla, as well as luxury hatches like Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz Class A, BMW Series 1, and electric models like the MG4.

Consumer preference has consistently shifted towards SUVs of various sizes, which offer more space, higher ground clearance, and competitive equipment packages.

With the Focus out of production, Ford reinforces its presence precisely in those more profitable segments, concentrating investments in compact and medium SUVs, globally appealing sports utility vehicles, and trucks, as well as hybrid and electric projects.

What Changes for Those Who Already Own a Focus

For current owners, the end of production does not mean the immediate disappearance of support.

Ford and its dealership network claim that replacement parts, maintenance, and technical assistance will remain available for a period compatible with the model’s lifespan, both in Europe and in markets where the car ceased to be sold earlier, such as Brazil.

Even without new units rolling out of factories, the legacy of the Focus remains present in private fleets, the used car market, and the memories of those who experienced the model over its four generations.

The question that arises is: what memory does the Ford Focus leave for Brazilian and European drivers after 27 years as one of the most recognized medium hatches in the market?

Tenho um Focus Heath 2013 e não me disfarço da máquina. Anda muito, baixa manutenção, estabilidade e um design excelente. Não quebra. Esse carro está de parabéns. Pena que parou sua fabricação.
