In 2018, the idea of a submarine railway tunnel linking Dubai to Mumbai was presented for the first time during the India-UAE Conclave in Abu Dhabi. Abdullah Ali, managing director of the National Advisor Bureau Limited, revealed the plans to connect Dubai to Mumbai via high-speed floating trains.
Currently, the flight from Mumbai to Dubai takes just over 3 hours, not including airport procedures. With the new tunnel, it is expected to reduce travel time by at least 1 hour, with trains traveling at speeds of up to 1,000 km/h. In addition to transporting passengers, the tunnel will facilitate trade between the two countries, allowing for the export of oil and gas from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India and the import of fresh water from the Narmada River to the UAE.
The plan is to install two huge curved concrete tubes in the Arabian Sea. These floating tubes will be completely waterproof and anchored by industrial pontoons for stability. In addition to the tracks, the tubes will contain pipelines for the transport of gas, oil, and water between Dubai and Mumbai. The idea includes transparent windows so passengers can enjoy the underwater view.
Maglev Trains Use Electromagnets to Lift the Train Off the Rail and Propel It Forward
Inside the tubes, the trains will operate in a complete vacuum to reduce air resistance, utilizing magnetic levitation technology (maglev). Maglev trains use electromagnets to lift the train off the rail and propel it forward, theoretically reaching speeds of up to 600 km/h. Whether this will be possible in practice remains uncertain.

Thousands of houses in Brazil have slabs and pillars concreted with construction site mixers, and most owners are unaware that, without strict control of the dosage, this can compromise the structure’s strength and create risks that only appear years later, according to engineers and technical standards.
Although it is a fascinating idea, it will not be the world’s first submarine railway tunnel. The Channel Tunnel, which connects the UK to France, has been in operation since 1994. However, the Dubai-Mumbai tunnel will be unique in offering underwater views through transparent windows. The construction of the tunnel will be a technical challenge and will require an investment of billions of dollars.
To Maintain Its Leadership Position in Innovation and Infrastructure, Dubai Is Accelerating Efforts to Realize This Submarine Railway Project
Dubai faces competition from ambitious projects in the region, especially from Saudi Arabia, which is developing the linear city Neom. To maintain its leadership position in innovation and infrastructure, Dubai is accelerating efforts to realize this submarine railway project.
If the project comes to fruition, travelers between Mumbai and Dubai will have a new transportation option in addition to flights. This submarine railway tunnel will be a historic landmark and may inspire similar projects in other parts of the world.
