FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias Starts Production and Promises Innovations in the Pre-Salt
The FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias, or Mero 3, has begun the extraction of oil and gas in the Mero field, Libra block, pre-salt of the Santos Basin. With the capacity to produce up to 180 thousand barrels per day and compress 12 million cubic meters of gas daily, the platform promises a significant boost in the country’s energy production. This marks an essential advancement for Brazil.
Mero 3: High Productivity with Cutting-Edge Technology
Once it reaches peak production, the Mero field could produce up to 590 thousand barrels daily, with the innovative HISEP® system expected for 2028. With this system, oil and gas are separated on the seabed, and CO₂-rich gas is reinjected. This way, the FPSO reduces emissions and also eases surface processing, increasing sustainability.
Sustainability: FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias and Emission Reductions
In addition to its production capacity, the FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias reduces its carbon footprint with the HISEP® system. Therefore, CO₂ is reinjected into the seabed, which eases the load on gas processing at the surface and cuts emissions into the atmosphere. This makes the operation more efficient and responsible.

Petrobras approved the final investment decision for SEAP I (Sergipe Deep Waters), opening a new production frontier in the Northeast: Total investment for the two modules (SEAP I + SEAP II) exceeds R$ 60 billion, with an estimated production of more than 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
Libra Block Consortium: Strategic Partnership
The operation of the FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias is made possible thanks to the Libra block consortium, led by Petrobras, with a 38.6% stake. In addition, Shell Brasil, TotalEnergies, CNOOC, CNPC Brasil, and PPSA participate. This partnership is essential as it shares risks and enables investment in cutting-edge technologies.
The Impact of FPSO Marechal Duque de Caxias on the Energy Sector
In addition to energy security, the Mero field strengthens Brazil’s position in the pre-salt and expands oil exports. With MISC Group, the FPSO operator, the platform reinforces international interest in the pre-salt and positions Brazil prominently in the global energy market.
What’s Next for the Mero Field?
The Mero field continues to see investments in innovation and productivity, including the HISEP® system, which makes offshore production more efficient and less polluting. With increased production from Mero 3, new phases of development in the field may be announced, reinforcing the pre-salt in the energy matrix.
