Unprecedented Partnership Explores Potential of LPG in Aquaculture and Microgeneration of Energy
The search for sustainable energy alternatives in aquaculture has received a new ally: Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). Copa Energia and the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) are starting an innovative research partnership to expand the horizons of LPG use, with a project presentation scheduled for this Friday at the AGEAD/UFMS auditorium.
Sustainable Oxygenation in Aquaculture
Anchored at the UFMS Aquaculture Station and with the approval of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), the study aims for energy sustainability in family farming. By opting for LPG as an energy source for blowers and aerators – crucial devices that oxygenate the water – the idea is to replace traditional electric energy and diesel generators, which are less environmentally friendly. Caio Turqueto, CEO of Copa Energia, emphasizes the significance of the project, pointing to the safety that LPG can bring, preventing disasters such as fish deaths during power outages.
More than just an alternative, the project provides a boost to aquaculture on small properties, promoting jobs and ensuring additional income for families. This can be crucial in the fight against rural exodus, strengthening the Brazilian agrarian sector.

In Brazil, the research aims to benefit especially the production of Nile tilapia and pacu, two fish that have great relevance in national exports.
In this sense, the research is even more relevant considering the recent record of Brazilian aquaculture exports, as highlighted by studies from Embrapa Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Microgenerated Energy: The Future is Now
Another arm of this partnership extends to microgeneration of energy based on LPG, already showing promising results. This project, also with the ANP’s endorsement, has the potential to reach an impressive 75 megawatts. Marcelo Augusto Santos Turine, rector of UFMS, celebrates this innovation and the collaboration between academia, industry, and government in the search for advanced energy solutions for Brazil.
