Bracell Surprises The Industrial Sector By Swapping One City For Another In Billion-Dollar Megaproject, Revealing The Logistical And Strategic Behind-The-Scenes Of The New Choice In Mato Grosso Do Sul, Which Promises To Transform The Region Into The Heart Of Brazilian Cellulose.

Bracell, a multinational in the cellulose sector controlled by the Asian conglomerate Royal Golden Eagle (RGE), announced a mega-investment of US$ 4.5 billion in Bataguassu, in Mato Grosso do Sul.

The decision marks a turnaround in the company’s plans, which had initially chosen Água Clara as the location for its new factory.

The change of plans is due to logistical and strategic factors, with the choice of Bataguassu in the Cellulose Valley, a region with a vast forest base and more favorable logistical infrastructure.

With the new facility, Bracell hopes to strengthen the state’s role in the cellulose sector, consolidating it as the largest production hub of the commodity in Brazil.

The New Destination For The US$ 4.5 Billion Investment

The announcement was made following a meeting between Bracell executives and Senator Soraya Thronicke in Brasília.

During the meeting, the company revealed that Bataguassu would be the definitive location for the new industrial complex, which will be responsible for the production of cellulose from eucalyptus.

The investment, which corresponds to about R$ 25 billion, aims not only at cellulose production but also at creating 12,000 temporary jobs during construction and about 7,000 permanent jobs, with 3,000 direct vacancies in the industry and 4,000 in the associated forestry operation.

The choice of Bataguassu was not random.

The company already has approximately 100,000 hectares of eucalyptus plantations in the region, which will be integrated into the high-production belt of the Cellulose Valley.

This forest corridor, which includes municipalities such as Três Lagoas, Ribas do Rio Pardo, and Inocência, is already home to large cellulose factories, such as those of Suzano and Eldorado Celulose.

The strategic location, near the border with São Paulo, facilitates the flow of production to national and international markets.

Logistics And Infrastructure Under Pressure

The impact of a project of this magnitude is not limited to job creation.

With the installation of the new unit, a significant increase in truck traffic on the region’s highways is expected.

More than 80,000 additional trucks are expected to transit annually on highways BR-158 and MS-395, which means over 200 heavy vehicles per day.

This increase will pose a challenge for local infrastructure, especially concerning the maintenance and improvements of the roads leading to the railway and port shipping centers.

In response, Bracell executives have requested that the federal and state governments carry out a series of urgent improvements to the highways, including asphalt recovery, construction of shoulders, and the installation of third lanes on sections with inclines.

Additionally, highways BR-267 and MS-040 are also on the radar for investments and improvements, which could benefit the sector as a whole.

The concern with logistics extends to railways.

The new unit in Bataguassu will be located about 270 km from Aparecida do Taboado, one of the main railway shipping points in the region.

The connection between these two locations will be crucial to ensuring a continuous flow of raw materials and finished products.

This increases the need for expansion and modernization of railway infrastructure, to keep up with the growth in cellulose production and other forest products.

The Change Of Plans: Água Clara Is Left Out

Originally, Bracell had chosen Água Clara as the location for its new factory.

During the Brazil-Indonesia Business Forum in 2024, the company announced plans to invest in the city by constructing a plant with 2.8 million tons of cellulose per year.

Environmental studies were already underway for this location, indicating that the choice of Água Clara was practically consolidated.

However, in a surprising move, Bracell requested additional studies for Bataguassu, signaling a review of its strategy.

A few weeks later, the company announced the withdrawal from Água Clara and the confirmation of Bataguassu as the definitive investment destination.

The decision was mainly motivated by the proximity of the company’s large eucalyptus plantations and the superior logistical infrastructure that the city offers.

Mato Grosso do Sul: The New Cellulose Hub In Brazil

With the realization of the investment in Bataguassu, Mato Grosso do Sul will establish itself as the largest cellulose producer in Brazil, surpassing other states that already dominate the sector, such as São Paulo and Minas Gerais.

The new Bracell plant will be the fifth cellulose factory in the state, which already hosts major units from companies such as Suzano, Eldorado Celulose, and soon Arauco, which is also investing in the region.

The project fits into a growing trend of expanding the cellulose industry in the state, which has stood out for its high productivity and sustainability in its operations.

Bracell’s venture in Bataguassu is not only a billion-dollar investment but also a milestone in the industrial and economic development of the state.

According to Manoel Browne, a Bracell executive, the project will be one of the largest investments in the history of Mato Grosso do Sul.

The social and economic impact of the factory will be immense, not only due to the creation of direct jobs but also by stimulating the local economy, strengthening sectors such as commerce and service provision.

Sustainability And Innovation: The Future Of Bracell

Bracell already has a model sustainability unit in Lençóis Paulista, in São Paulo, and the expectation is that the Bataguassu plant will follow the same standard of innovation and environmental responsibility.

The company has been highlighted for its commitment to sustainable management of natural resources and for using innovative technologies that minimize the environmental impacts of cellulose production.

Furthermore, the project in Bataguassu has the potential to generate a virtuous cycle of development.

The integration of the plant with the Cellulose Valley, a region already established as a forest production hub, should further strengthen the cellulose production chain, bringing more innovation and technology to the industry as a whole.

The Transformation Of Bataguassu And The Future Of The Sector

The arrival of Bracell in Bataguassu symbolizes a new phase for the Brazilian forestry sector, especially in Mato Grosso do Sul.

The state has demonstrated itself to be an increasingly important logistical and industrial hub for the country, with companies investing in infrastructure and technology development.

If Bracell’s investment materializes, it will not only strengthen Mato Grosso do Sul’s position in the global cellulose landscape but also enhance Brazil’s competitiveness in this market.

Sustainability, innovation, and social commitment from Bracell are factors that can serve as a model for other companies seeking growth in the Brazilian industrial sector.

The key to the project’s success will be the effective implementation of improvements in logistical infrastructure and ensuring that forest production is managed sustainably and responsibly, minimizing environmental impact.

What do you think about the impact this mega-investment will have on the sector and Mato Grosso do Sul? Do you believe the state will really consolidate as the largest cellulose hub in Brazil? Share your opinion in the comments!
