Google And Apple Change “Gulf of Mexico” To “Gulf of America” In Their Maps In The U.S., And The Mexican Government Sues The Companies After Silence In The Face Of Formal Requests For Correction
The name change made by Google in its mapping service generated an immediate reaction from the Mexican government. In the United States, the Gulf of Mexico now appears as “Gulf of America,” following statements from President Donald Trump. However, the change has not been applied in other countries, such as Brazil.
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, did not remain silent. On Friday, May 9, she announced that she is suing Google for this decision.
According to her, the company did not respond to previous requests to reverse the change. “What we are saying is that Google should put ‘Gulf of America’ where it says ‘Gulf of America,’ which corresponds to the part of the territory of the United States, and put Gulf of Mexico in the territorial part that corresponds to Mexico and Cuba,” she stated.

In addition to Google, Apple has also adopted the new name in its maps in the United States. The platforms follow the political stance of the current U.S. government, which has caused criticism and diplomatic consequences.
The case will now be analyzed in court. The Mexican government hopes that the original designation will be maintained in the digital maps operating in its territory.
