The Government of Minas Gerais, with the support of Fiemg, developed the Minas Hidrogênio program, which aims to encourage the production of green hydrogen in the state

This Thursday (12) the Minas do Hidrogênio Program was launched, which aims to encourage and structure the production of green hydrogen in Minas Gerais. With the clean energy source, the expectation is that costs will be reduced and energy security and efficiency increased, bearing in mind that hydrogen can be stored and used in periods of high demand. The program is an initiative of the State Government alongside the Federation of Industries of the State of Minas Gerais (Fiemg).

President of Fiemg speaks

Green hydrogen can be obtained through the electrolysis of biomass, biofuels or water, resources easily found in Minas Gerais. Therefore, the State Government program aims to encourage the entire production chain, from the production of equipment to the creation of new technologies.

According to Flávio Roscoe, president of Fiemg, the production and use of green hydrogen in Minas Gerais could boost the industry in an incredible way, as in addition to being a source of clean energy, green hydrogen can be stored, bringing a guarantee of supply and can also be transported, being taken to places where traditional energy cannot meet the needs.

Green hydrogen will expand the energy supply in Minas Gerais

Roscoe states that the cost and availability of energy for industry are two factors that define the competitiveness of countries and states. The federal government has been investing in alternatives to reduce the costs of Brazilian energy, which was once a decisive factor in industrial competitiveness and, currently, is an impediment to investment in some cases.

For the president of Fiemg, the production of clean energy source in the state will be a solution to expand the supply of energy and also to reduce costs. According to Roscoe, in addition to the state government, help from the Ministry of Mines and Energy will also be needed for the program, which needs a regulatory framework, storage systems, structuring of the production and transport chain, to move forward.

Minister of MME highlights the importance of renewable sources for the Brazilian market

According to Bento Albuquerque, Minister of Mines and Energy, the use of green hydrogen as a clean energy source is an essential initiative that could contribute to the diversification of the energy matrix and meet needs in peak periods more effectively than other energies, such as wind and solar, which do not fully meet demand.

According to Paulo Brant, deputy governor, the program created by the Government is well regarded by the state and the energy issue is essential not only from the point of view of the high cost, which weighs on pockets, but also from a sustainable point of view.

The reduction in carbon emissions is a global goal and the technological route of hydrogen is one of the most promising. For the development of the plan, Cemig, BDMG, Indi and many other bodies that, like the government and Fiemg, are willing to promote the sector will be involved.
