With a Billion-Dollar Investment and a Promise to Solve Traffic on BR-163/364, the Ring Road Is in Its Final Phase and Can Change the Dynamics of Urban Mobility After Years of Standstill and Challenges.
After years of waiting, promises, and delays, the Ring Road works connecting Cuiabá to Várzea Grande are finally progressing at full speed, promising to resolve one of the main traffic bottlenecks on BR-163/364.
This ambitious project, which has already consumed over R$ 200 million in investment from federal and state governments, is seen as a crucial solution to divert heavy truck traffic from urban areas, providing a significant improvement in mobility and safety in the region.
Final Works and Next Steps
The construction of the North Contour of the Ring Road is in full swing, with two projects nearly completed: two new bridges over the Cuiabá River and a viaduct over MT-010 (Estrada da Guia) are over 90% complete.

When finished, these structures will provide direct support for traffic on the ring road and offer significant relief to the flow in the central areas of Cuiabá and Várzea Grande.
These works include over 20.5 km of duplicated highway, with a concrete surface, connecting directly from BR-163/364 in Várzea Grande to MT-251 in Cuiabá.
Who Pays the Bill and Cost Division
According to information from the involved agencies, the initial investment of R$ 206 million was divided between state and federal governments, with the Union covering 60% of the cost and the government of Mato Grosso covering the remaining 40%.
However, the state also took responsibility for expropriations and potential contractual adjustments, which could raise its contribution to up to 60% of the final amount.
This financing model places an additional burden on the state budget but is seen as necessary for the completion of this project of significant regional impact.
Main Stages and Technical Challenges of the Project
In addition to the two bridges and the viaduct, other impactful structural works are planned, such as another viaduct over MT-251 and two level crossings in busy areas, near the regions known as Bom Futuro and Arautos do Evangelho.
With the execution of these works, the responsible consortium is progressing in the earthworks phase and preparing containment structures and access embankments.
To ensure the safety and durability of the new roads, all pavement will be made of concrete, which increases the capacity to support the intense flow of heavy vehicles that will transit through the area.
History of Interruptions and Resumption of Works
The Ring Road works began in 2006 but faced successive obstacles and were interrupted in 2011 after allegations of irregularities.
During this period, only 9 km of the highway, in a single lane, were completed.
However, after a series of interventions and studies conducted by the Infrastructure and Logistics Secretariat of Mato Grosso (Sinfra) between 2019 and 2020, it was possible to unblock the project with the publication of a new bidding announcement.
The resumption of work occurred only in 2021, bringing a real prospect of completion to the project.
Future Expansion of the Ring Road and Connection Goals
The highway expansion plans also include the construction of an additional stretch that will connect MT-251 to BR-070/163/364 in Cuiabá, as well as bridges over the Coxipó and Aricá rivers and a new viaduct.
When completed, the project will total 52 km in length, forming a true urban bypass route that will allow trucks to avoid the central region.
This additional route can make the Ring Road a strategic logistical axis, facilitating the transportation of cargo between the Industrial District of Cuiabá and other regions of Mato Grosso.
Importance of the Project for Mobility and the Economy of the Region
The Cuiabá and Várzea Grande Ring Road emerges as a strategic solution for the state’s infrastructure, offering direct benefits to the regional and national economy.
By reducing heavy traffic in urban areas and decreasing travel time on BR-163/364, the project can directly impact the productivity of sectors that rely on road transport.
With this new infrastructure, the expectation is that road safety will improve, as well as opening new development prospects for the urban area.
With completion nearing, will the Ring Road actually bring the expected benefits? And you, do you believe this project represents a step forward or a challenge for the region? Share your opinion in the comments.
