A new interstellar object is capturing the attention of the scientific community. Named 3I/ATLAS, it is only the third interstellar visitor ever detected, and it may represent something far beyond a simple comet or asteroid.
The boldest hypothesis comes from Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, who suggests an alien origin — and possibly hostile.
Alarming Hypothesis

Now, he teams up with Adam Hibberd and Adam Crowl from the Initiative for Interstellar Studies to raise the possibility that 3I/ATLAS may be technology from an advanced — and dangerous — civilization.
The theory is based on the so-called “dark forest hypothesis” by author Cixin Liu. According to it, the universe is filled with silent and aggressive civilizations that avoid emitting signals to avoid becoming targets for destruction. Thus, cosmic silence would not be a lack of life, but fear.
Strange Characteristics
3I/ATLAS has drawn attention due to its size: more than 20 kilometers in diameter, much larger than ‘Oumuamua, which had dimensions similar to an obelisk.
Moreover, the object shows no spectral signs of carbon molecules, making it unlikely to be a common comet.
In a previous publication, Loeb asked: “If 3I/ATLAS is not an asteroid, nor a comet, then what is it?”. The absence of these characteristics strengthens his curiosity about the true nature of the object.
Reactions and Caution
Despite the bold theory, Loeb and his colleagues acknowledge that there is a good chance the object is natural. In their article, which has yet to be peer-reviewed, the authors admit that the most likely scenario is that 3I/ATLAS is a comet or another natural interstellar body.
Loeb, however, advocates the importance of considering alternative possibilities. For him, raising these hypotheses helps prepare protocols for future detections, as well as stimulating scientific thought free of biases.
Controversy and Debate
Loeb’s ideas are not well-received by everyone. Many colleagues accuse him of sensationalism. His theories about alien artifacts often generate controversy and divide opinions.
Still, he remains steadfast in his investigations, arguing that debate is essential.
In the blog accompanying the article, Loeb even suggests defensive measures should the dark forest hypothesis prove correct.
He admits that such measures may be futile, but does not dismiss the need for preparation.
The trio of scientists concludes the article with a balanced position. Even if 3I/ATLAS proves to be a natural object, the study offers important reflections.
According to them, the ideas discussed can serve as a foundation for analyzing other interstellar objects that will be detected in the coming years.
The debate, therefore, remains open — and 3I/ATLAS continues to spark curiosity and caution among astronomers.
