Case Raises Alarm About Prolonged Use of Old Containers and the Risk of Heavy Metal Leakage into Drinks Like Coffee and Tea

A man died after suffering from lead poisoning linked to the continuous use of a thermal mug for almost 20 years. The case drew attention for involving a common everyday item used for a long time without replacement.

He was about 50 years old and had more than 30 years of experience driving when he crashed his car into a workshop on his way to work, without even braking. Emergency teams found him disoriented, and the situation required detailed medical evaluation.

Tests indicated severe anemia, cortical cerebral atrophy, and abnormal kidney function. The man was referred to the nephrology department for further investigation.

Accident on the Way to Work Turned the Case into a Turning Point

The driver was heading to work when he lost control and crashed his car into a place that operated as a workshop. The impact occurred with no signs of braking.

Upon being attended to, he was confused and showing signs of altered general condition. This led to a series of tests to understand what might have caused the episode.

The medical evaluation revealed severe problems in the body, including changes in the blood, brain, and kidneys. From that point on, the case began to be treated as a risky situation.

Signs Ignored for Weeks, Fatigue, and Changes in Taste

Before the accident, the man had been frequently experiencing fatigue. He also noticed that his sense of taste had changed and that food seemed less salty than usual.

These symptoms, despite appearing common, can indicate a larger issue when they persist. In this case, they were linked to a toxic problem in the body.

As the investigation progressed, doctors began to search for a cause that could explain the changes in the body and the progressive signs of deterioration.

Lead Poisoning, What Is Lead Poisoning and Why Is It Dangerous

The diagnosis pointed to lead poisoning, a term used to define lead intoxication. Confirmation came after laboratory tests, including blood analyses.

This type of contamination is dangerous because it can affect multiple areas at the same time. Lead can cause damage to the blood, impair brain function, and overload the kidneys.

In many cases, exposure occurs slowly, with accumulation over time. When symptoms become evident, the condition may already be advanced.

Mug Used for Almost 20 Years Had Oxidized Interior and Released Metal

The source of the lead was investigated until doctors found a decisive detail. The man used the same mug almost every day for nearly two decades.

The inner layer of the mug was oxidized, which favored the release of lead into the liquid. Daily consumption of acidic coffee further increased this risk.

The result was repeated and prolonged exposure, contributing to the worsening of his health over time.

Coffee, Tea, and Juices Can Increase the Risk in Old Containers

Some drinks can facilitate the release of heavy metals when stored for a long time in old or damaged containers. Among them are fruit juices, coffee, tea, and traditional Chinese medicine.

Acidic or alkaline beverages can accelerate reactions in the internal material, especially when there is wear and tear. This becomes even more concerning when the container already shows signs of rust or deterioration.

The practical recommendation is simple: observe the condition of the thermal mug and avoid prolonged use when there are visible damages or loss of the inner layer.

Rapid Deterioration, Symptoms Similar to Dementia, and Outcome in a Year

As the condition progressed, the man began to exhibit degenerative symptoms similar to those of dementia. His health continued to decline even after monitoring.

Subsequently, he developed aspiration pneumonia, associated with an episode of asphyxiation. He died just one year after the car accident.

The case reinforces that lead poisoning can have serious consequences when exposure is not interrupted in time, especially in situations of daily and prolonged use.

The main warning is that thermal containers also age and can become dangerous when damaged. Using the same thermal mug for almost 20 years was the central factor that led to continuous exposure to the metal.

Replacing old items, observing signs of wear, and being cautious with beverages like coffee and tea in deteriorated containers can reduce risks and prevent complications that put lives at risk.
