Even present in dozens of cities in São Paulo, Havan has not yet reached the capital, which gathers approximately 11.9 million inhabitants and represents the largest municipal consumer market in Brazil
Founder and owner of Havan, Luciano Hang attributed the absence of a megastore of the chain in the city of São Paulo to bureaucracy, despite the company’s strong presence in the state and the retailer’s national expansion.
Hang provided the explanation during an interview with host Ratinho, on SBT, on December 7, 2016. On the occasion, the businessman answered why the chain had not yet opened a unit in the São Paulo capital.
According to him, the municipality’s bureaucratic requirements make it difficult to implement the large structures used by Havan. Moreover, these processes slow down the expansion.

In this scenario, the company concentrated a significant part of the investments in municipalities in the interior, where it opened new megastores over the past years.

City of São Paulo remains without a Havan megastore
The absence is notable because the city of São Paulo represents one of the largest retail markets in the country and concentrates about 11,904,961 inhabitants.
The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics released this number in the population estimate for 2025.
Even so, Havan has not installed any unit within the capital’s limits. Meanwhile, cities in the interior of São Paulo have received dozens of the chain’s establishments.
The company is close to reaching the mark of 200 megastores spread across Brazil. Therefore, the national advance contrasts with the lack of an operation in the largest city in the country.
Luciano Hang explains strategy focused on the interior
During the interview on Programa do Ratinho, Luciano Hang stated that the bureaucracy of the São Paulo capital made it difficult to open new enterprises.
In the businessman’s assessment, the chain needs to find large plots, build large structures, and complete all administrative stages before inaugurating each store.
For this reason, Havan prioritized municipalities in the interior. At the same time, the company left some major capitals in the background during the expansion process.
The statement presents Hang’s public justification. However, the businessman did not detail specific projects, denied requests, or processes presented to the São Paulo City Hall.
State of São Paulo has 36 stores of the retail chain
Although the capital still lacks a megastore, the state of São Paulo has 36 Havan units, according to data released by the company itself.
With this result, São Paulo ranks second among the states with the largest presence of the chain. The state shares the position with Paraná, which also has 36 stores.
Santa Catarina leads the national ranking, with 51 establishments. The state hosts the company’s headquarters and also represents the birthplace of Luciano Hang.
Following, Rio Grande do Sul has 22 units, while Mato Grosso has 11 stores of the retailer.
States with the highest number of stores mentioned
- Santa Catarina: 51 units;
- São Paulo: 36 units;
- Paraná: 36 units;
- Rio Grande do Sul: 22 units;
- Mato Grosso: 11 units.
Presence in the state contrasts with absence in the capital
The number of establishments in São Paulo territory shows that the state holds a relevant position in Havan’s commercial strategy.
However, the chain has not yet brought one of its megastores to the city of São Paulo.
The scenario creates a clear contrast. São Paulo ranks second nationally in the number of state units, but its capital remains off the retailer’s map.
So far, Luciano Hang attributes this absence to the bureaucratic difficulties in enabling a megastore in the municipality.
Havan’s expansion kept focus outside major capitals
The strategy described by the entrepreneur helps explain why the company consolidated its presence in the interior before advancing into some of the largest urban markets in Brazil.
In this way, Havan expanded its national presence, approached 200 establishments, and made São Paulo one of its main states.
The largest Brazilian metropolis, however, remains without any unit of the network. Thus, the absence continues to be one of the most curious points of the expansion led by Luciano Hang.
