With the new value of R$ 293,47, running a red light becomes one of the most severe traffic violations in Brazil, adding seven points and potentially leading to the suspension of the driver’s license in case of recurrence
Running a red light has become one of the most common and expensive traffic violations in Brazil in 2025. The new fine is R$ 293,47, classified as very serious by the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). This measure was updated by Denatran and aims to reduce collisions and pedestrian accidents at intersections, which still lead the statistics of fatal accidents in the country.
Current Fine and Possibility of Discount
The fine for running a red light is R$ 293,47, and the driver who pays by the due date can obtain a 40% discount, as provided for in Law No. 13.281.
Payment must be made through the Detran website or app, using the infraction ticket number.

USP will have quotas for people with disabilities starting in 2028, adapts Fuvest, Provão Paulista, and Enem-USP from 2027 to the new São Paulo state law, and creates a working group to define rules for reserving spots and specialized support in undergraduate courses.
Furthermore, this amount represents double the average penalty applied for speeding, reinforcing the punitive nature of the rule.
Points and Risk of Driver’s License Suspension
Running a red light adds seven points to the National Driver’s License. If the driver commits four violations of this type within 12 months, they may have their license suspended for up to one year.
Detran initiates the process about 30 days after notification, ensuring the driver has the right to a preliminary defense.
This policy aims to protect pedestrians and cyclists at crosswalks, especially in major urban centers.
How to Appeal the Fine
It is possible to appeal the penalty by presenting a preliminary defense within 30 days. The appeal must be submitted through the Detran website with mandatory documents, such as the vehicle registration (CRLV), proof of residence, and, if possible, technical evidence — for example, videos, photos, or testimonies.
The process occurs in three stages: initial defense, judgment by JARI, and, if denied, a new appeal to Cetran.
Statistics show that up to 25% of appeals are accepted when the driver presents consistent evidence.
Traffic Violation: Why Running a Red Light is So Dangerous
According to data from Contran, about 30% of fatal accidents at intersections are caused by drivers who run red lights.
In many cases, collisions occur at speeds exceeding 60 km/h, significantly increasing the risk of death.
In 2024, Brazil registered over 12,000 occurrences of this type, causing billions in losses to the healthcare system and society.
Safe Driving and Prevention of Fines
Avoiding fines and preserving life depends on small actions. During peak hours, such as at 6 PM, the risk doubles due to distractions from mobile phones.
Stopping two meters before the crosswalk can provide crucial seconds to avoid accidents.
Recycling courses and updating drivers help eliminate points and keep the driver’s license valid. With the amount of R$ 293,47, driving attentively is the best way to protect your wallet and your safety in 2025.
