Enrollment is open for new free courses at the Federal Institute of Mato Grosso do Sul (IFMS) offered by the Language Center (Cenid). These include English, Spanish, and Sign Language courses starting in the second semester. In total, there are 571 openings for classes at the basic and intermediate levels, with in-person classes in the municipalities of Aquidauana, Campo Grande, Corumbá, Coxim, Dourados, Três Lagoas, Naviraí, and Ponta Porã.

Out of the total openings for free courses at the Federal Institute, 140 are allocated for new classes, while 431 are for ongoing classes. Of the total, 75% are reserved for students and staff of IFMS, and the remainder for the general public.
To compete for the available spots in the selection process, candidates must have the minimum required education (completed elementary school from 1st to 5th grade) and prove it at the time of enrollment, if selected.

Although the English, Spanish, and Sign Language courses are free, enrolled students must purchase the book that will be used during classes. For the Spanish course, the recommended book is Nuevo Ven 1 for the first stage and Nuevo Ven 2 for the second stage, both published by Edelsa.
For the English course, the book Interchange 1, 5th Edition is expected for the first stage, and Interchange 2, 5th Edition for the second stage, from Cambridge University Press. For the sign language course, the recommended book is ‘LIBRAS? What Language Is This?: Beliefs and Prejudices Surrounding Sign Language and the Deaf Reality,’ authored by Audrei Gesser, published by Editora Parábola in 2009.

Enrollment in the English, Spanish, and Sign Language courses will remain open until June 10 through the candidate’s page, which can be accessed on the Federal Institute’s website.
The notice No. 027/2024 also presents the rules of the selection process. For those without internet access, there is the option to visit the Relationship Center (Cerel) at the IFMS campuses and request to use a computer from the institution to register, observing the addresses and service hours.
During registration, interested parties must provide their CPF number and indicate the desired course, according to available openings, which can be checked on the IFMS website. It is important for the candidate to choose the appropriate level of the free courses, with Basic – Level I being the option for those without prior knowledge of the offered language.
How Will the Selection Process for the English, Spanish, and Sign Language Courses Be?
Candidates for the ongoing classes will undergo an online placement test, conducted on Moodle, the Federal Institute’s virtual learning environment. The test results, along with the preliminary list of candidates eligible for the drawing, will be announced on June 28.
The electronic draw, which will determine the selected candidates for the spots, is scheduled for July 4, with the preliminary results being published the following day. The final classification of the selection process and the 1st call will be published on July 10.
