Japanese Unicharm announces purchase of Brazilian Nutrire to expand presence in the Latin American pet market.

The Japanese multinational Unicharm officially announced the acquisition of 100% of the Brazilian manufacturer Nutrire Indústria de Alimentos, a move that marks the Asian group’s large-scale entry into the Brazilian pet market. The operation was confirmed by the company itself in a statement released on May 15, 2026 and reinforces the company’s strategy to accelerate expansion in the premium food segment for dogs and cats in Latin America.

The acquisition places a Gaucho manufacturer founded in 2001 and present in more than 50 countries under Japanese control. According to information from Nutrire itself and statements related to the transaction, the Brazilian company has operations in Garibaldi, Rio Grande do Sul, and in Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, exporting products to markets on four continents. The financial value of the negotiation has not been disclosed by the companies so far.

Unicharm wants to enter the Brazilian pet market aggressively

In an official statement, Unicharm stated that Brazil has become a strategic target because it currently represents the third largest pet market in the world and has an expected annual growth rate of over 10%, driven by the increase of the so-called “humanization of pets,” a trend where dogs and cats receive treatment increasingly similar to that of family members.

According to the Japanese company, the acquisition is part of the new global strategic plan “Project-Renaissance”, a program valid between 2026 and 2030 that defines the well-being and animal care segments as priority growth drivers for the company.

Unicharm declared that it intends to combine:

  • Nutrire’s industrial infrastructure;
  • the Brazilian company’s export network;
  • and its own global marketing, research, and development structure.

The goal is to accelerate expansion throughout Central and South America.

Nutrire was born in Rio Grande do Sul and expanded international presence

Founded in 2001, Nutrire grew in the Brazilian premium pet food market and began exporting to dozens of countries over the past decades.

According to information released by Unicharm itself, the Brazilian manufacturer internally controls almost the entire production chain, from raw material selection to manufacturing and distribution.

The company became known mainly for its lines of dog and cat food aimed at the premium and super premium segment.

The Japanese statement also highlights that Nutrire has a production structure based on advanced industrial technology and a wide export network concentrated mainly in neighboring countries of Latin America.

The Japanese Unicharm operates in more than 80 countries

Although the announcement drew attention mainly for the pet market, Unicharm is already a global giant in hygiene and wellness products.

Founded in 1961, in Tokyo, the company operates in more than 80 countries and regions, according to the company’s corporate information. The group is internationally known for:

  • baby diapers;
  • feminine hygiene products;
  • adult incontinence products;
  • masks;
  • wipes;
  • and pet care items.

In Brazil, the company sells brands such as:

  • MamyPoko;
  • Sofy;
  • Lifree;
  • and Antimos.

The company’s pet division has existed since 1986 and includes products such as:

  • dog and cat food;
  • hygienic mats;
  • litter boxes;
  • disposable diapers for animals;
  • and pet hygiene systems.

Pet market has become one of the most aggressive disputes in the global industry

Unicharm’s advance into Brazil comes at a time of rapid growth in the global pet sector.

According to the Japanese statement itself, the company considers the Latin American market strategic because of the increase in consumption of premium products and the expansion of the domestic animal population.

In recent years, large multinationals have started to compete for space in:

  • premium pet food;
  • functional feeding;
  • veterinary nutrition;
  • specialized snacks;
  • animal hygiene;
  • and products aimed at pet well-being.

Brazil has become a central piece in this dispute because it has one of the largest populations of dogs and cats on the planet and an extremely relevant internal market for the global industry.

Negotiation had been under discussion for about a year

According to Jornal do Comércio, discussions involving the sale of Nutrire to Unicharm had been taking place for approximately a year before the official announcement.

Even after the acquisition, statements released in Brazil indicate that operations should continue to function independently initially.

Executives connected to the companies stated that the agreement represents not only commercial expansion but also a long-term strategic alignment for the growth of the pet operation on the continent.

The acquisition shows how the Brazilian pet market has become a global target

The purchase of Nutrire by Unicharm helps to show how the Brazilian pet sector has started to attract the attention of large international groups.

The country has ceased to be seen merely as a regional consumer and has begun to occupy a strategic position within the global animal care industry.

And perhaps this is exactly what makes the negotiation so important: a Japanese giant with operations spread across the world decided to use a Brazilian manufacturer as a platform to expand its presence throughout Latin America within a market that moves billions every year.
