Artemis 2 astronauts were confronted at the US Capitol by a man who accused the lunar mission of being staged, in an episode that once again exposed conspiracy theories about space travel in the face of public records, official broadcasts, and international monitoring.
Astronauts from NASA’s Artemis 2 mission were approached by a man who accused them of “lying” about the trip around the Moon during a visit to the United States Capitol in Washington.
Recorded on video and shared on social media, the scene shows the crew being targeted by conspiratorial allegations without the man presenting documents, images, or technical data to support the accusation.
The approach occurred weeks after the return of the Orion capsule to Earth, on April 10, 2026, in the Pacific Ocean, near the coast of San Diego, California.

According to NASA, the mission marked the first crewed flight of the Artemis program and took four astronauts on a lunar flyby trajectory, without landing on the Moon’s surface.
In the video circulated on social media, the man is seen shouting phrases like “Stop lying,” “You never went to space,” and “NASA is a joke.”
During the approach, the astronauts did not stop to discuss the accusations, and pilot Victor Glover briefly looked in the man’s direction before continuing to walk with the other crew members.
The mission included commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency.
According to records released by NASA, the crew completed a nearly ten-day trip around the Moon, with official broadcasts, mission images, and coverage by international media.
Unproven accusation targets NASA’s historic mission
The man’s statements repeat arguments used for decades by groups that challenge space missions, especially those who deny manned trips to the Moon or the passage of astronauts through space.
In the recording shared on social media, none of the accusations made against the Artemis 2 crew are accompanied by verifiable evidence, such as technical records, official documents, or independent data that contradict the mission.
The timeline of Artemis 2 was publicly recorded from the launch on April 1, 2026, to the return of the Orion capsule to the Pacific Ocean on April 10.
Throughout the journey, NASA released images, technical updates, and broadcasts of different stages of the flight, including lunar approach procedures, communication with the crew, and preparation for the return to Earth.
Artemis 2 did not land on the Moon, and this fact is stated in the official mission description, defined by the American space agency as a manned test flight around the natural satellite.
The objective stated by NASA was to evaluate, with astronauts on board, essential systems of the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System rocket before more complex stages of the Artemis program.
The crew traveled beyond Earth’s low orbit, circled the Moon, and returned to the planet without performing a lunar walk or descent on the lunar surface, as occurred in the Apollo missions.
Victor Glover was mentioned during the approach
In the footage shared on social media, Victor Glover appears among the astronauts directly confronted by the man during the crew’s passage through the Capitol, in Washington.
Glover was the pilot of Artemis 2 and became the first Black astronaut to join a lunar mission, a milestone highlighted by NASA since the official announcement of the crew in 2023.
Before being selected for Artemis 2, the astronaut had already participated in the SpaceX Crew-1 mission, which took crew members to the International Space Station in a NASA operation with SpaceX.
The presence of Christina Koch was also highlighted by the space agency, as she was part of NASA’s first lunar crew with a woman on board in a mission around the Moon.
Jeremy Hansen represented Canada in the crew and became the first non-American astronaut to travel on a manned mission around the Moon, according to information from the Canadian Space Agency.
Even in the face of the shouts recorded in the video, the members of Artemis 2 continued walking and did not prolong the interaction with the man who accused them of faking the mission.
The episode occurred in a context where astronauts from lunar missions have already been targeted, at different times, by approaches made by people who contest documented space travel.
Artemis 2 had public broadcasts and records
Artemis 2 put humans back on a lunar trajectory for the first time since the end of the Apollo program, according to information released by NASA about the lunar exploration program.
During the mission, the Orion capsule traveled hundreds of thousands of kilometers, passed by the Moon region, and returned to Earth with a controlled splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
Images taken by the crew and cameras installed on the spacecraft were released by the space agency, which also published technical bulletins on systems, trajectory, communications, and routine on board.
Upon return, Orion separated from the European service module, a component responsible for functions such as propulsion, power, and structural support during part of the flight around the Moon.
After re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, the capsule deployed parachutes before splashdown in the Pacific, a stage monitored by recovery teams responsible for retrieving the astronauts from Orion.
The operation included participation from the United States Navy, which supported the sea recovery after the capsule landed near the coast of San Diego, California.
According to NASA, the manned test mission served to validate safety procedures, spacecraft performance, and system operations necessary for subsequent lunar journeys.
Theories about Moon travel persist on social media
The accusation that space missions were “staged” has circulated for decades and gained new forms of distribution with social networks, short videos, and posts on digital platforms.
Since the Apollo missions, conspiracy groups have questioned records of trips to the Moon and often use interpretations of images, shadows, flags, or official broadcasts to support their claims.
Experts in scientific communication and space institutions point out that such missions involve large teams, tracking, telemetry, technical records, journalistic coverage, and monitoring by observers from different countries.
In addition to the materials released by space agencies, lunar missions usually generate technical documents, images, trajectory data, and communication records used by engineering teams and control centers.
In the case of Artemis 2, the mission took place in a digital communication environment, with official broadcasts, high-definition images, and public updates on flight stages.
Even so, conspiracy content continues to circulate on networks through short clips, impactful phrases, and direct accusations, a format that tends to reach audiences outside the technical debate.
When there is no verifiable documentation to support an accusation, journalistic fact-checking considers official records, public data, independent coverage, and available technical information about the fact in question.
Artemis Program prepares new lunar missions
Artemis 2 is part of the program with which NASA intends to resume manned missions to the Moon and develop a more enduring human presence in the lunar environment.
The American space agency reports that the mission served as a manned test of the Orion spacecraft before future stages, which should involve more complex operations in the Artemis program.
In the plans released by NASA, the program also seeks to prepare technologies and procedures for long-duration missions, with the Moon used as a test environment for systems and operations.
This planning includes transportation, communication, life support, and deep space procedures, areas considered by the agency as important for lunar missions and future longer-distance travels.
The video’s repercussion in the Capitol increased the circulation of accusations against the crew, but the public records of the mission indicate launch, trajectory, return, and recovery of the Orion capsule.
According to information released by NASA, Artemis 2 conducted a manned test flight around the Moon, without a lunar landing, with four astronauts on board and a return to the Pacific in April 2026.
