Free Postgraduate Course in Portuguese Language for Deaf Students Has 40 Openings Announced by MEC

The National Institute of Deaf Education (INES</a), in partnership with the Ministry of Education (MEC), has just announced the opening of 40 spots for the lato sensu postgraduate course in Portuguese Language: Reading and Writing in Education for the Deaf, scheduled to start in February 2025. Half of the spots are allocated for Deaf candidates and the other half for hearing candidates, respecting parity in the selection process. The course is free and offers an excellent opportunity for teachers and professionals in the fields of Languages, Pedagogy, Speech Therapy, and related areas who wish to specialize in bilingual education for the deaf.

With 360 class hours distributed over 12 months, classes will be held twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6 PM to 10 PM, at the INES headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. The course aims to provide ongoing training, complementing the knowledge of professionals who already work or wish to work in teaching Portuguese to the deaf, a field that is increasingly growing in Brazil. For those seeking quality free courses, this is a unique opportunity.

How Does the MEC Selection Process Work?

The selection process will occur in two stages, with a first phase of submitting a text or video between September 10, 2024, and October 10, 2024. In this stage, candidates must write a text of three to four pages or submit a video in sign language lasting between 10 and 15 minutes, addressing issues related to teaching reading and writing to the deaf. This is a qualifying and eliminatory stage, where candidates who score 7.0 or higher will be classified for the second phase.

The second stage will be an in-person interview scheduled for November 11 to 14, 2024, at the INES headquarters. Candidates who qualify for the interview will be called via a list published on the institute’s official website on November 10, 2024. The interview will be conducted by an evaluating commission with the assistance of sign language interpreters for deaf candidates.

Who Can Participate and What Are the Requirements?

This free course is aimed at graduates in the fields of Languages, Pedagogy, Speech Therapy, Communication, or related areas. All candidates must provide proof of completion of a higher education course recognized by the MEC – Ministry of Education at the time of enrollment. Deaf candidates will need to present a medical report confirming hearing loss, as per the terms of Decree No. 5.296/2004.

Moreover, all participants must ensure a minimum attendance of 75% in all course subjects to obtain the completion certificate. The minimum average for passing each subject is 7.0, and students will have up to six additional months after the end of classes to submit their Final Course Project (TCC).

What Free Courses Are Offered?

The lato sensu postgraduate course in Portuguese Language: Reading and Writing in Education for the Deaf offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes subjects such as:

  • Reading and Writing Strategies in Portuguese for Deaf Students
  • Literature and Development of Deaf Readers
  • Digital Textual Genres
  • Didactics and Methodology of Bilingual Education

It is important for candidates to read the notice available on the website carefully to ensure they meet all required criteria.
