Augusto Bezerra, Rural School Student, Overcomes Barriers, Wins International Science Exam, and Shows That Talent Can Arise Anywhere With Family and State Government Support
He cried tears of joy upon hearing his name echo on a stage far from home. At just 8 years old, young Brazilian Augusto de Paula Bezerra won a bronze medal at the prestigious Copernicus Global Round 2026 international science olympiad, held in Houston, Texas, USA.
The scene, marked by emotion and pride, represents much more than a prize. It is proof that talent and dedication can flourish anywhere.
An Achievement That Started in the Countryside
Augusto studies at a public rural school in Baturité, Ceará, and lives on a farm. Even at such a young age, he already demonstrates remarkable skills, having learned to read at just two years old.

Still without his front teeth, he faced an international competition that brought together students from various parts of the world at Rice University from January 21 to 26.
The travel costs were covered by the city’s mayor’s office and the government of the state of Ceará. This support was crucial for the boy to represent Brazil and, with pride, honor every effort made on his behalf.

Difficult Exam, Historic Result
Augusto competed in the natural sciences category and was awarded in category 1 for his performance on the high-level multiple-choice written exam, held on January 23, covering questions in chemistry, physics, biology, and astronomy.
According to his mother, Vaneuda Almeida de Paula, he prefers to read the questions in English and doesn’t like to see the translation.
“The translation sometimes gets a bit confusing,” she told Diário do Nordeste. During the exam, the boy was “<strong(calming and excited,” but at the awards ceremony, the emotion was overwhelming.
Tears, Flags, and the Boy’s Pride
To celebrate the achievement, Augusto raised the flag of the State of Ceará on stage, alongside children carrying flags from Turkey, Jordan, and Kazakhstan. When he came down, he cried a lot, unable to articulate what he was feeling.
The bronze medal symbolizes not only a personal victory but also the strength of public education and the transformative power of opportunities.
Augusto’s journey begins early but already inspires many other dreams.

I’m retired from the US Army and I live in NE Brazil. My wife is from Baturite and she knows this boys family. It’s great to see someone from very humble origins earn the opportunity to get ahead in the World. Good job kid and keep up the hard work.
Ainda podemos ter esperança de um Brasil melhor.
