With a Focus on Sustainability and the Expansion of Its AI-Focused Data Centers, Meta Announced a New Solar Energy Contract That Will Add 650 Megawatts to Its Energy Matrix in Partnership with Supplier AES.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, made another important agreement in the solar energy sector with AES last Thursday (21).
There will be 400 MW installed in Texas and another 250 MW in Kansas, aimed at powering the data centers that support its expanding operations — especially in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), which has high energy demands.
With this move, Meta reaches its fourth solar energy contract as early as 2025.

Solar energy covered rooftops and deserts, but now it’s preparing a mountain of old glass: up to 78 million tons of photovoltaic panels could become waste by 2050 as the world races to recycle the shiny skin of the energy transition.

Solar panels at sea can generate up to 12% more energy than land-based plants, study finds: Researchers from Taiwan discovered that offshore solar panels take advantage of the natural cooling of water to increase electrical efficiency, reduce heat losses, and expand renewable energy production in regions with limited available land space.
All agreements made this year focus on the state of Texas, which is solidifying itself as a strategic hub for solar projects due to its favorable regulatory environment and sunny climate.
Texas Leads the Solar Advance in the United States
The preference for Texas is not accidental. The state has led the installation of new solar capacity in the United States over the past two years.
The combination of fast licensing, efficient grid infrastructure, and ideal weather conditions makes the region attractive for technology companies seeking sustainable and scalable energy sources.
According to AES, the supplier for the new projects, solar energy provides a competitive advantage for companies like Meta.
“Rapid generation and low electricity costs are key factors that attract hyper-scale companies like Meta,” said Andrés Gluski, CEO of AES.
Solar Energy Gains Ground Due to Efficiency and Agility
The adoption of solar energy is standing out due to the possibility of bringing forward electricity generation, even before the total completion of power plants.
This characteristic has been decisive for companies operating at a fast pace, such as big techs, which need quick solutions to ensure autonomy and predictability in energy consumption.
In addition to the speed of implementation, reduced costs make solar projects highly competitive compared to other sources, further driving their large-scale adoption.
Totaling all its global investments in clean energy, Meta already accumulates over 12 gigawatts in renewable capacity.
This figure reflects the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and leading the tech sector towards a greener and more conscious operation.
This new agreement with AES reinforces Meta’s role as one of the main drivers of the energy transition in the digital sector, while also strengthening the support base for its digital platforms and artificial intelligence tools.
