According to the second balance of the Central Bank released this Tuesday (14), there are still R$ 10.55 billion in idle money in financial institutions, with R$ 8.15 billion belonging to 47 million individuals and R$ 2.4 billion from 5 million companies, with free consultation on the site valoresareceber.bcb.gov.br using CPF and gov.br account.

There is a billion-dollar amount of idle money in Brazilian banks that belongs to individuals and companies who are not even aware that these resources exist. The Central Bank reported this Tuesday (14) that R$ 10.55 billion in funds remain in financial institutions awaiting redemption, with R$ 8.15 billion belonging to 47 million individuals and R$ 2.4 billion from 5.06 million companies. The data considers amounts recorded until February of this year. For those who have never checked, there is idle money that may have been in your name for years without you being notified.

The Central Bank’s system allows free consultation to see if individuals, including deceased ones, and companies have left funds in banks, consortia, or other institutions. So far, R$ 14.14 billion have already been returned since the system was created, but the remaining R$ 10.55 billion show that most people with idle money have not yet made the inquiry. The only official site to verify is valoresareceber.bcb.gov.br, and any other channel that promises access to these resources is a scam.

How to check if you have idle money using CPF on the Central Bank website

The inquiry process is simple and free, but it requires a silver or gold level gov.br account with two-step verification activated.

To check if there is idle money in your name, access the site valoresareceber.bcb.gov.br, enter your CPF, and log in with your gov.br account credentials. The system shows in seconds if there are amounts to be received and in which financial institutions they are deposited.

Those who do not have the gov.br app on their phone need to download it first, fill in the information, and perform facial validation to enable the two-step security verification.

Access to the values system is done with CPF and password, and then the system requests a code generated in the app. This extra layer of security was implemented by the Central Bank in February to prevent fraud in accessing the idle money of Brazilians.

The new feature that allows automatic withdrawal of idle money via Pix

Since May of last year, the Central Bank has enabled a function that allows the automatic redemption of funds.

Those who activate the automatic request do not need to check the system periodically or manually register the request for each amount of unclaimed money that exists in their name. Enrollment is optional and exclusive to individuals who have a Pix key of the CPF type registered with a financial institution.

When an amount is identified, the financial institution credits it directly to the citizen’s account via Pix, without the need for additional contact or request. The Central Bank does not send a notice when the deposit is made, so the person receives the unclaimed money directly in the account linked to the CPF.

To enable the function, simply access the system with a silver or gold level gov.br account and activate the automatic redemption option. Those who do not yet have a CPF type Pix key must register it before activating the service.

The types of unclaimed money that the Central Bank system finds

The unclaimed money in financial institutions can have various origins that the holder often does not know about. Amounts from closed checking or savings accounts, improperly charged fees, consortium shares, loan installments, and even resources from insurance groups that have not been redeemed make up the total that the Central Bank tracks in the system.

Often, these are small amounts of R$ 10 or R$ 50, but in other cases, they can be significant sums accumulated over the years.

The system also allows for the consultation of unclaimed money from deceased individuals, but in this case, it is necessary to be an heir, executor, administrator, or legal representative.

A responsibility term must be filled out before the consultation, and after identifying the amounts, the responsible party contacts the institutions to verify the redemption procedures. For families who have lost loved ones, this consultation can reveal resources that no one knew existed.

Why is there still R$ 10 billion in unclaimed money if the system is free

The main explanation is that most people do not know the system exists or do not believe they may have amounts to receive. Of the 47 million individuals with unclaimed money, a significant portion has never accessed the Central Bank’s website and will likely not do so without being informed by someone.

The lack of mass publicity and the distrust generated by scams that use the theme of “amounts to receive” as bait deter people who would be entitled to redeem their resources.

Another factor is the requirement for a silver or gold level gov.br account with two-step verification. For many Brazilians, especially the elderly or those with less digital familiarity, this requirement represents a technical barrier that prevents access to unclaimed money.

Those who do not have the app installed, have not completed facial validation, or do not know how to create a gov.br account end up giving up even before consulting. The system works, but only for those who can get through the digital entrance door.

The precautions to avoid falling for scams when looking for unclaimed money

The issue of forgotten funds in banks is one of the most exploited by scammers in Brazil. The government does not contact you asking for personal data or additional information for the return of unclaimed money via message, phone call, or any other channel other than the official website valoresareceber.bcb.gov.br.

Any SMS, WhatsApp, email, or call requesting banking details promising to release funds is an attempt at fraud.

The only legitimate way to check and request the return of unclaimed money is through the Central Bank’s website, accessed with CPF and gov.br account. There is no separate official app for this function, and no intermediary is authorized to make the retrieval on behalf of the citizen.

For those who do not feel safe making the inquiry online, the recommendation is to seek help at bank branches or from the Central Bank’s own customer service, never through links received via message.

Have you checked if you have unclaimed money in any bank through the Central Bank system? Did you find any amount or were you surprised to discover that the system exists? Let us know in the comments. With R$ 10 billion waiting for retrieval, the chance that someone reading this article has amounts to receive is real, and sharing this information could help someone in need.
