New GMC concepts revealed in California show an important strategic shift for the Hummer brand, betting on smaller, more affordable SUVs and trucks prepared to compete with Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Gladiator
GMC has finally admitted, even if indirectly, what part of the North American automotive market has already been noticing in recent years: the current Hummer EVs have become too large, too expensive, and out of reach for most consumers. And the answer to this may have appeared in two new concepts revealed by General Motors in the United States.
According to information released by GM itself during the inauguration of the new Advanced Design studio in Pasadena, California, the new Hummer X SUV and Hummer X Truck were presented as mobile laboratories of design, technology, and engineering. Although the automaker states that the models will not go into production, the concepts provide clear clues about the brand’s future.
The revelation took place in the United States in May 2026 and quickly caught the attention of the international specialized press. As published by the Carscoops portal, the new utilities bet precisely on the opposite of the current formula of gigantic Hummer EVs: smaller dimensions, a more rational proposal, and still an extremely aggressive look.

GMC bets on smaller Hummer to face Bronco and Wrangler

The main highlight of the presentation was the Hummer X SUV, a sports utility vehicle with a size similar to the Ford Bronco. The concept measures 188.3 inches in length (4,783 mm) and has a wheelbase of 116 inches (2,946 mm), being 10.7 inches (272 mm) shorter between the axles compared to the current Hummer EV SUV.
Despite the reduction in dimensions, GMC has kept the robust visual identity that made the Hummer one of the most recognizable vehicles on the planet almost intact. The model features straight lines, a muscular body, enormous ground clearance, and a look clearly aimed at extreme off-road.
Additionally, the technical package impresses even the most demanding enthusiasts. The concept uses 37-inch tires, beadlock wheels, Multimatic shock absorbers, removable fenders, and extensive underbody protection to tackle heavy trails.
The numbers also show that the project was not designed just for show. The SUV has an approach angle of 44 degrees and a departure angle of 46 degrees, features usually found only in vehicles specialized in extreme off-road.
Meanwhile, the interior strongly focuses on technology and modularity. The cockpit has stackable infotainment screens that can be added or removed according to the driver’s preference. GMC also incorporated a drone integrated into the vehicle, capable of analyzing obstacles and sending real-time information to the car’s system.
Pickup mixes Chevrolet Colorado DNA with futuristic look

In addition to the SUV, GMC also unveiled the Hummer X Truck, a pickup that follows the same visual and technological philosophy, but in a configuration aimed at the mid-range segment.
The model measures 207.3 inches (5,265 mm) in length and has a wheelbase of 130.7 inches (3,319 mm). Although it is larger than the SUV presented, the pickup still falls short of the exaggerated proportions of the current Hummer EV Truck sold in the United States.
In practice, the concept seems to occupy a space close to that of the Chevrolet Colorado, but with a much more futuristic and aggressive visual proposal.
Just like the SUV, the pickup uses removable components, solutions aimed at customization, and various equipment prepared for severe off-road use. GMC also took advantage of the concepts to present its new Flex Fab technology.
According to the automaker, the system allows for the manufacturing of metal parts in low volume without the need for traditional industrial stamping molds, reducing costs and increasing production flexibility for special projects.
GMC may be preparing a new future for the Hummer brand
Even while insisting that the concepts will not be produced, GMC left signs that are hard to ignore. This is because the current Hummer EVs face significant commercial difficulties in the United States due to the high price, excessive weight, and low accessibility for the average consumer.
Moreover, the brand’s electric models entered the market costing over $100,000 in some versions, a price that drastically restricts the interested audience. The situation became even more delicate after reports of sales slowdown and temporary production halts.
In this sense, the new smaller concepts seem to function as a market test to evaluate a possible expansion of the Hummer line towards more compact, affordable, and competitive SUVs and pickups.
The strategy would make sense especially in light of the enormous commercial success of models like the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Gladiator, which currently dominate the adventurous utility segment in the United States.
Even if the models presented never exactly reach dealerships, experts believe that various elements of design, technology, and visual proposal should appear in future vehicles of the brand in the coming years.
And considering the speed of changes in the global automotive market, this transformation may happen much sooner than many people imagine.
