An Unusual Adaptation: A Motorcycle Equipped with a Car Timing Belt Replaces the Traditional Chain, Bringing Curiosity
A timing belt and a motorcycle chain are essential components in their respective contexts, but they serve completely different functions. This difference raised a curious question: could a timing belt be used in place of a motorcycle chain? An audacious experiment attempted to answer this issue.
Timing Belt: Precise and Delicate Synchronization
The timing belt is an indispensable item in internal combustion engines. Typically made of rubber reinforced with synthetic or metallic fibers, its primary function is to synchronize the crankshaft and the camshaft. This synchronization is crucial for the valves to open and close at the exact moment in relation to the movement of the pistons.
Failures in the timing belt can be disastrous, causing severe damage to the engine. A common example is the collision between valves and pistons, which can require extremely costly repairs or even engine replacement.

Brazil will face a week of climatic extremes with temperatures ranging from 0 degree in Serra Gaúcha to 36 degrees in the Southeast, rainfall of up to 200 millimeters in the North and Northeast, and a polar air mass that promises to be the most intense of 2026.

Brazil had been escaping unscathed from the coral bleaching that was devastating reefs worldwide, but that’s over: Maragogi, Natal, and Salvador have already recorded mass mortality, and the oceanographer from the Coral Vivo Project says that the country now faces an unprecedented level of problem.

Prepare your heavy umbrella: Maranhão, Piauí, and Ceará go on alert at the end of April with up to 100 mm of rain per day, winds that could reach 100 km/h, risk of flooding and lightning strikes, as the northern coast of the Northeast becomes the main corridor for storms.
To avoid problems, it is recommended to replace the belt every 60,000 to 100,000 km, depending on the vehicle model and the manufacturer’s guidelines.
Motorcycle Chain: Primitive Power Transmission
While the timing belt operates internally in the engine, the motorcycle chain has another function: transferring the power generated by the engine to the rear wheel.
Composed of interlinked metal links, it is designed to withstand the high torque forces that a motorcycle demands.
Maintaining the chain is equally important. Regular lubrication and adjustments are necessary to prevent wear, and replacement should occur at the first sign of excessive wear. A compromised chain can slip or break, putting the rider’s safety at risk.
The Metal Projeto Experiment: Testing the Theory
Curious to test the possibility of replacing the motorcycle chain with a timing belt, the YouTube channel Metal Projeto conducted a practical experiment. The goal was to apply a timing belt to a Honda CG, a popular model in Brazil.
In the video, the YouTuber details the challenges encountered throughout the process. From the initial adaptation to the necessary adjustments, the experiment showed that the replacement is not simple. One of the biggest obstacles was the difficulty in dealing with the differences in tension and torque between the two systems.
