Fine For Driving Without Glasses Is Serious And Can Reach R$ 300. The Number Of Drivers With Traffic Fines For Driving Without Glasses Is Increasing. Understand How To Avoid Penalties

The driver who needs glasses to drive and usually leaves them at home may face serious problems. This is because the fine for driving without glasses is significant and, according to the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), this infraction is considered very serious. In this article, we will understand everything about this traffic fine and how to avoid it.

Fine For Driving Without Glasses Can Reach R$ 293.47 In 2025

According to article 162 of the CTB, the driver caught in this condition receives 7 points on their National Driver’s License (CNH) and must pay a fine of R$ 293.47. In addition, the vehicle is seized until the presentation of a licensed driver.

The traffic fine is also applicable to those who need, but forget to use a hearing aid, physical prosthesis, or other adaptations of the vehicle imposed at the time of granting or renewing the driving license.

To give you an idea of the seriousness, the driver caught without a seatbelt receives a lesser penalty, as this infraction is serious, subject to 5 points on the CNH and a fine of R$ 195.23.

To know if you need the device and not receive a fine for driving without glasses, it is important to remember that the process to obtain a National Driver’s License (CNH) goes through several stages, including medical and psychological exams, theoretical course, legislation test, practical course, and driving test.

It is during this process that the evaluator determines whether you need glasses to drive or not. To indicate that the driver requires glasses or corrective lenses for driving, there is a small letter “A” on the back of the document.

Number Of Brazilians Who Need Glasses Or Lenses Increases By 77%

Now that you know how the fine for driving without glasses works, it is important to know that the number of Brazilians with restrictions on their CNH due to vision problems has nearly doubled in the last decade.

According to data from the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran) and analyzed by the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology (CBO), the number of licensed drivers with this type of observation on their license increased from 14.4 million to 25.4 million between 2014 and 2024. This represented a 77% increase.

The CBO attributes this growth to several factors, such as the aging population, prolonged exposure to screens of mobile phones and computers, the rise in the incidence of chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and stress, as well as unhealthy lifestyle habits like poor diet and lack of exercise. Additionally, the vision assessment exams for obtaining a CNH have become stricter in recent years.

Traffic Fine For Driving Without Glasses Also Increases

In Brazil, the fine for driving without glasses has been growing exponentially. In Paraná, for example, out of every ten drivers, three need glasses or contact lenses to drive.

Only in the first half of 2024, the number of drivers fined for driving without glasses or lenses on state highways increased. According to the State Highway Police (PRE), there were 184 instances in 2023.

From January to June 2024, there were 198 infractions of the same type, meaning, in just six months, the number surpassed the total from the previous year.

Captain Marcio Rodrigues, from the PRE, reinforces that driving without glasses or corrective lenses, when indicated, poses a traffic risk. In the process of renewing the CNH, if the doctor identifies that the driver needs glasses or lenses, they must refer them to an ophthalmologist, and only after the consultation with the specialist can the driving test at the Department of Traffic be repeated.
