Strategic Expansion of Natural Gas Infrastructure in Barra da Tijuca Aims to Serve 6 Thousand New Consumers Until June 2025
Naturgy, the gas distributor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is investing approximately R$ 10.6 million in the expansion of natural gas infrastructure in Barra da Tijuca. The project includes the construction of a new distribution network with a length of six kilometers, located on Avenida das Américas, between Recreio Shopping and BRT Pontões/Barra Sul. The works, which began in May 2025, are scheduled for completion in June of the same year and are being carried out without the need for local traffic disruptions.
Goal of Serving 6 Thousand New Consumers
With the expansion of the network, Naturgy aims to serve around 6 thousand new customers in the region, including residences, new developments, commercial establishments, and CNG stations. Currently, Barra da Tijuca and Recreio dos Bandeirantes already have more than 115 thousand consumers served by the company. The initiative aims not only to increase the supply of natural gas but also to enhance the safety and reliability of the distribution system in the area.
Benefits of Piped Natural Gas
Piped natural gas offers convenience through continuous and unlimited supply, eliminating the need for manual refueling. It provides reliability as it is a high-quality product that cannot be tampered with. It ensures safety by dissipating easily in case of leaks and by adhering to strict installation standards. It offers convenience with post-consumption payment and the option for automatic billing. It contributes to sustainability by emitting fewer pollutants and preserving the environment.

Alignment with Expansion and Sustainability Policies
The investment in Barra da Tijuca is therefore part of a broader plan by Naturgy to expand piped gas in the State of Rio. In addition, in March 2025, the company announced an investment of R$672.3 million, which aims to expand the network in 17 municipalities in the state. Among these municipalities, Araruama, Angra dos Reis, and others will benefit from the new infrastructure. Furthermore, the project includes the development of sustainable corridors, with CNG stations for heavy vehicles, reinforcing its environmental commitment. The expectation is to generate about 4 thousand direct and indirect jobs. Additionally, an agreement with Petrobras has been signed to reduce the cost of natural gas starting in January 2025, making the fuel more accessible and competitive.
Commitment to Regional Development
The expansion of natural gas infrastructure in Barra da Tijuca demonstrates, therefore, Naturgy’s commitment to sustainable development. It also aims to significantly improve the quality of life for residents while promoting structural advancements in the region. By investing in technology and safety, the company seeks to meet the growing demand for efficient and clean energy. The initiative aligns with public policies for expanding the energy matrix and encouraging the use of less polluting fuels. The completion of the works is scheduled for June 2025. Therefore, the new network is expected to strengthen urban infrastructure and, in addition, promote a more sustainable environment in the region.
