The Port of Recife recently underwent dredging works and is now ready to receive larger vessels. Thus, ships and cruises with drafts of up to 8 meters and lengths of 150 meters can dock in the area. Being large vessels, they allow for a greater number of passengers, which further boosts the economy and business activities.
Large Ship from National Geographic Arrived at the Port of Recife with Significant Crew
As mentioned, the fasting of the Port of Recife was broken in grand style. After all, the first ship to anchor was from National Geographic, one of the largest and most renowned companies in the media sector. The large vessel arrived at the Port of Recife with 148 passengers and 70 crew members. This was the first cruise ship to arrive at the port after the dredging work.
This vessel is remarkable as it travels from pole to pole docking at specific and interesting points for passengers. In this context, it sails through the Baltic Sea, Norway, Canada, and the South American coast.
The majestic ship measures 112 meters in length and departed from Trinidad and Tobago, entering national territory through the state of Amazonas. Thus, it passed through Belém, stopped in Fortaleza, and completed the route at the Port of Recife. The route will also include stops in Ilhéus and Salvador, before reaching the destination in Punta Arenas, Chile.
Recife Prepared the City to Welcome Tourists and Stimulate the Local Economy
To provide a more welcoming experience for the ship tourists and crew, the Pernambuco Tourism and Leisure Secretariat, Municipal Guard, Social Defense Secretariat, and Recife City Hall formed a partnership. Thus, they were able to devise a good reception strategy for the 148 passengers and 70 crew members.
Additionally, the Municipal Informatics Company (Emprel) provided free wireless service for the entire terminal and a tourism app with tips for the region. The guests were welcomed at the Port of Recife by the Recife City Band.
This Could Be the Largest Cruise Season in the Last Decade and Will Generate Billions, Creating Job Vacancies According to Experts
After a 2-year hiatus without receiving vessels, the Port of Recife could have the largest cruise season in the last decade, according to the Brazilian Association of Maritime Cruises. After all, experts indicate that the financial movement will be R$ 3.3 billion with cabotage ships and R$ 1.6 billion with long-haul vessels.
As a result, the financial movements promise to generate more than 43,000 direct and indirect job vacancies in the country. Furthermore, the number of berths available for docking the ships may see a 47% increase compared to the 2019/2020 season.
Also, this season will last six months, from October 2022 to May 2023, with the forecast of 23 ships passing through. Thus, it is estimated that more than 35,000 passengers will visit the Port of Recife, boosting the economy, business activities, and job creation.
