Saudi Arabia Innovates with NEOM, Designing a 170 km Futuristic City Powered by Renewable Energy and Other Projects for Tourists Promising Sustainability and Zero Emissions, but Faces Questions About Environmental Viability and Social Impact.
Saudi Arabia is revolutionizing the concept of urban planning with NEOM, a futuristic metropolis intended to become the new model of sustainable city in the world. Designed to extend 170 km as a linear city, The LINE, part of the NEOM region, promises a self-sustaining lifestyle, powered exclusively by renewable energy, aiming for zero carbon emissions. The NEOM region also hosts the projects Sindalah, Trojena, and Oxagon.
NEOM represents an intersection of ambition and reality, challenging the status quo of urbanization and sustainability. While Saudi Arabia proposes to build the most futuristic city in the world, questions about its viability and true sustainability continue to spark global debates.
NEOM: The Sustainable Urban Future Already Under Construction in Saudi Arabia
Initiated by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2021, NEOM is more than just a city; it is a vision for urban future, where technology and sustainability meet to create an innovative environment. Divided into areas such as Sindalah, Trojena, and Oxagon, NEOM is defining the future of luxury tourism, urban mobility, and sustainable industrialization.

After 14 years of construction and a diplomatic crisis that nearly led to a military confrontation over control of the Nile, Ethiopia inaugurated the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa — the dam is 170 meters high, holds 74 billion cubic meters of water, and generates 5,150 megawatts.
Sindalah promises to be a luxury oasis with resorts, golf courses, and a marina for 86 yachts, aiming for inauguration in 2024. Trojena will feature a ski resort in the desert, with sustainability at its core, utilizing eco-friendly artificial snow. Oxagon, a floating port city, aims to be the sustainable logistics center of the future.
Challenges and Realities of NEOM’s Futuristic Vision
However, NEOM’s grand vision brings significant challenges. Questions about the feasibility of building a sustainable metropolis in the desert and the environmental implications of massive constructions, such as the creation of artificial islands and ski resorts in the desert, are critical. The debate over real sustainability versus the perception of sustainability is ongoing.
This project is a landmark in Saudi social and economic reforms, aligning with the Saudi Vision 2030 to diversify the economy and open the country to global tourism. NEOM symbolizes an effort to reshape Saudi Arabia’s image, promoting a narrative of innovation and openness.
Sindalah is a Resort of the Future

Sindalah is one of the highlight areas within the NEOM project, designed to be a luxurious tourist destination in Saudi Arabia. Located along the Red Sea, this island promises to transform into an epicenter of luxury and leisure, providing an exclusive experience for visitors from around the world.
Planned to include a resort, three luxury hotels, golf courses, and a wide range of restaurants and shops, Sindalah aims to be a symbol of opulence and innovation. The island will also feature a large marina, capable of accommodating up to 86 yachts, standing out as an important milestone in the development of high-end tourism in NEOM. Sindalah is expected to be the first project within NEOM to open, welcoming its first guests in 2024, setting a new standard in luxury tourism and sustainability.
Trojena is a Mini ‘Switzerland’

Trojena is another significant area within the NEOM project, planned to become an exclusive ski village and tourist destination in the heart of the Saudi desert. This unique project aims to combine luxury with sustainability, creating an outdoor ski resort in a desert mountainous region. Approximately 75% of Trojena’s slopes will be covered in artificial snow, produced sustainably using only water and air, with all the necessary energy sourced from renewable resources.
Trojena is also a demonstration of Saudi Arabia’s futuristic vision in terms of tourism and sustainability. The location was chosen to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games, marking a historic moment as it will be the first time a Middle Eastern country hosts such an event.
Oxagon is a Port, But Much Better
Oxagon is the component of NEOM focused on industrial and logistical development, designed to be a floating and completely sustainable port city in the Red Sea. This ambitious project aims to establish Oxagon as a hub of innovation and creativity, integrating residential, recreational, and tourist areas with an advanced industrial complex and a research center.
Oxagon stands out for being planned as the first fully automated port in the world and the first integrated logistics center, reflecting its commitment to efficiency, advanced technology, and sustainability. Located on one of the world’s busiest trade routes, Oxagon aims to revolutionize the concept of port cities, combining industrial activity with sustainable practices.
