The new maternity hospital reorganizes care for pregnant women, expands health infrastructure, and reduces transfers to other municipalities
A new health structure was recently inaugurated in Belford Roxo, in the Baixada Fluminense, marking the opening of the city’s first public maternity hospital after 36 years of emancipation. The unit now offers obstetric care within the municipality, thereby changing the access dynamics for pregnant women to health services. Before the opening, pregnant women had to seek care in other cities, which made the process more complex. The new maternity hospital was designed to initially perform around 400 deliveries per month, which expands the local care capacity.
Unprecedented structure redefines obstetric care in the municipality
The maternity hospital has 47 beds and is equipped to meet different levels of patient needs. The unit includes risk classification, medical offices, and an observation room, which organizes the flow of care from the moment of arrival. The space also features a surgical center and a manual intrauterine aspiration room, intended for the safe evacuation of the uterus in cases of first-trimester miscarriage. Additionally, post-anesthesia recovery rooms have been implemented, responsible for monitoring women after delivery, ensuring continuous follow-up within the unit itself.
Public investments enable the opening of the unit
The establishment of the maternity hospital was made possible after investments announced by the City Hall of Belford Roxo and the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro. According to the municipality, around R$ 500 million were allocated to the city in various areas. For the maternity hospital, approximately R$ 12 million were released for the purchase of essential equipment for the unit’s operation. A monthly transfer of R$ 5 million was also guaranteed for five months, allowing the initial operation of the space and the organization of services offered to the population.

Local care reduces transfers and expands access to health
With the maternity hospital in operation, care for pregnant women is now provided within Belford Roxo, reducing the need for transfers to other municipalities. This change facilitates access to prenatal care, delivery, and recovery, concentrating different stages of care in the same location. The structure has been organized to provide continuous support to patients, improving the logistics of the municipal health system and reducing dependence on neighboring cities.
New unit marks a historic advance in the public network of Belford Roxo
The inauguration of the maternity hospital represents a milestone in public health in the municipality, as it establishes a structure that did not exist since the city’s emancipation. The capacity to perform up to 400 deliveries per month demonstrates the unit’s potential to meet local demand. This scenario reorganizes access to obstetric care and strengthens the public health network, consolidating a significant change in the municipality’s structure.
