Road intervention is expected to start in the second half of 2026 and promises to create a direct connection between two strategic highways of Greater BH
Vereda Engenharia Ltda. won the bid to build the Ferradura Viaduct, on the border between Belo Horizonte and Nova Lima. Thus, the project advances as one of the most anticipated interventions for the region’s mobility.
According to Diário do Comércio, the decision was made on June 16, 2026, after the result was ratified. Furthermore, the company was summoned to sign the contract within five business days.
The project has an estimated investment of R$ 48 million. Therefore, construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2026. The expected execution period is up to 24 months.

Direct connection between MG-30 and MGC-356
The Ferradura Viaduct will connect the exit of MG-30 to MGC-356. In this way, drivers will be able to travel between the highways without passing through the Belvedere junction, in the South-Central Region of Belo Horizonte.
Additionally, the intervention aims to reduce pressure on one of the main traffic bottlenecks in the Metropolitan Region. Currently, traffic jams are frequent on MG-30, which connects Belo Horizonte to Nova Lima.
Similarly, MGC-356 experiences heavy traffic. The road serves as an exit from Belo Horizonte to Rio de Janeiro, historical cities, condominiums, and neighborhoods of Nova Lima.
Among these neighborhoods is Jardim Canadá, one of the areas impacted by regional traffic. Therefore, the project targets a strategic section for residents, workers, and drivers.
Resources will come from the private sector
The project will be funded with resources from the private sector. More precisely, the money comes from compensations for environmental impacts caused by real estate developments in the region.
Furthermore, the viaduct is part of a commitment agreement signed in 2017. The agreement involved the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the city halls of Belo Horizonte and Nova Lima, and the responsible association.
According to Itatiaia, the intervention is part of this infrastructure and mobility commitment. Meanwhile, the Association of Entrepreneurs of Vila da Serra and Vale do Sereno Neighborhoods led the selection of the construction company.
Work helps, but doesn’t solve everything alone
Despite the importance of the project, experts assess that the viaduct does not solve the region’s mobility problems on its own. Even so, it represents a significant step in reorganizing the local flow.
Traffic engineer Silvestre de Andrade advocates for a broader approach. For him, the solution needs to combine quality public transport, road improvements, and micromobility alternatives.
In this sense, bicycles and scooters can function as a complement. However, these options depend on integration with the transport system and existing urban infrastructure.
Silvestre also highlights that it is not enough to place buses on already congested roads. Therefore, planning needs to consider traffic, the capacity of avenues, and different forms of movement.
Next steps for the Ferradura Viaduct
With the approval completed, the next step is the signing of the contract with Vereda Engenharia. After that, the schedule foresees the start of construction in the second half of 2026.
Meanwhile, the project remains one of the main bets to improve the connection between BH and Nova Lima. Even so, the impact will depend on the combination with other mobility measures.
In this way, the Ferradura Viaduct arrives as an important response to the region’s traffic. However, the complete solution requires continuous planning, road integration, and more transport options.
