Recognized as “Land of the Sun”, North of Minas strengthens the solar energy chain, attracts investments, and consolidates Minas Gerais as a national reference in the photovoltaic sector.

The North of Minas Gerais has taken on a strategic position in the Brazilian electric sector after being officially recognized as “Land of the Sun”. This classification consolidates the region as a hub for solar photovoltaic energy and reinforces the local vocation for large-scale clean energy generation.

At the same time, the state decree enhances the economic visibility of the territory and creates a more favorable environment for private and public investments.

This recognition comes at a time of accelerated expansion of solar energy in the country, with Minas Gerais ranking among the top producing states. Thus, the northern region of Minas clearly integrates the national energy transition agenda.

Solar Potential and Territorial Characteristics Drive Projects

The consolidation of North Minas as a reference in solar energy is directly linked to the natural conditions of the region. The high incidence of sunlight throughout practically the entire year ensures a high generation potential.

Additionally, the availability of large contiguous areas favors the installation of large-scale solar farms.

Another relevant factor is the cost of land. Compared to other regions of the state, the lower prices make projects more economically attractive. This set of technical and geographic characteristics explains the advancement of the photovoltaic sector and the growing interest from investors.

According to the state coordinator of the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (Absolar), Bruno Catta Preta, areas previously seen as unproductive have gained a new economic function.

“Because of the sun, which really burned down, the land there is unproductive, not very good for agriculture or livestock. And the sun, which was a problem, has become a solution, a source of income for families and cities, with tax revenues from solar energy.”

Decree Officially Recognizes the Economic Relevance of Solar Energy

The title of “Land of the Sun” was granted through a decree from the government of Minas Gerais, signed by Governor Romeu Zema. The measure is supported by Law No. 25,628, of December 16, 2025, which officially recognizes solar photovoltaic energy generation as an activity of relevant economic interest for the State.

In addition to the symbolic recognition, the legislation provides institutional status to the solar energy production chain in North Minas.

In practice, the text signals political and economic priority for the sector, creating a foundation for public policies, specific regulations, and incentives for the financing of new enterprises.

Classification Can Accelerate Investments and Unlock Enterprises

With the new classification, North Minas is now treated as a hub of state economic interest. This tends to facilitate project structuring, reduce bureaucratic barriers, and increase attractiveness for companies in the solar energy sector.

In addition to the state decree, the auctions promoted by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) for areas designated for the creation of solar farms also contribute to boosting the region. These mechanisms enhance market predictability and stimulate the expansion of the photovoltaic matrix in Minas Gerais.

Meanwhile, the state has benefited from investments in electrical infrastructure. In recent years, Minas has seen the implementation of new transmission lines and substations, a crucial factor for the flow of generated energy and for system safety.

Minas Gerais Reinforces National Leading Role in Solar Energy

National data confirms the relevance of the state in the sector. Brazil currently has 61.9 gigawatts of installed capacity in solar photovoltaic energy. Of this total, Minas Gerais accounts for 12.8 gigawatts, equivalent to 20.7% of all installed capacity in the country.

This performance places Minas in a prominent position in the national scenario and strengthens the role of Northern Minas as one of the main frontiers for solar energy expansion. With the title of “Land of the Sun”, the region enhances its visibility and definitively integrates into the energy planning focused on renewable sources.
