Sustainability at the XVI Pará Industry Fair Is Guaranteed by Norte Energia.
The greenhouse gas emissions generated by the electricity consumption of the XVI Pará Industry Fair (FIPA) will be neutralized by Norte Energia, the concessionaire of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant. The company will donate renewable energy certificates I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificate) to the fair in a quantity sufficient to offset all the electricity consumed during the setup, dismantling, and the four days of the event, which takes place from May 22 to 25 in Belém.
The Importance of I-REC Certificates
Each I-REC equals 1 MWh of clean, renewable energy generated. By acquiring them, companies can neutralize Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions related to electricity consumption. For FIPA, 20 certificates will be used, compensating for all the energy spent in the Hangar of the Amazon Convention and Trade Center. The I-REC certificates, issued by the Totum Institute, are internationally recognized and certify that the energy used is from hydropower and renewable sources.

35 countries spent more than 20 billion euros to build the largest nuclear fusion reactor in the world in southern France — the main magnet is so powerful that it could lift an aircraft carrier, and the plasma reaches 150 million degrees.

In the United States, 99% of all new electric capacity in 2026 will be from solar, wind, and batteries — totaling 86 GW in a single year, the largest jump since 2002, while natural gas accounted for only 7%.

The ‘artificial sun’ of China did what physicists said was impossible — it maintained stable plasma at densities that exceed the theoretical limit and took a real step towards unlimited fusion energy.

With US$ 629 billion invested in 1,900 clean energy projects, Brazil consolidates itself as a renewable powerhouse — but still relies on fossil thermal power plants for 15% of its energy matrix.
“Pará is the largest producer of electricity from clean and renewable sources in the country, through the hydropower plants located within its territory, and Norte Energia, through the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant, plays a fundamental role in this scenario. We also highlight that the Amazonian industry is committed to helping Brazil achieve its decarbonization goals, and FIEPA, as a representative of the sector, could not fail to do its part, which is why it readily accepted the certificate offered by Norte Energia for the largest event of the industry in the North of the country. This action once again demonstrates the electric utility’s engagement with the topic and the responsibility that FIEPA has to hold a carbon-free event,” said Alex Carvalho, President of FIEPA.
FIPA 2024: Business and Sustainability in the Amazon
With the theme “Business and Sustainability in the Amazon,” promoted by the Federation of Industries of the State of Pará (FIEPA), the expectation is that the fair will receive 20,000 visitors. Among the participants are entrepreneurs, freelancers, academics, technicians, industry workers, and students. The event promotes an exchange between one of the most important sectors of the Brazilian economy, bringing together companies from various segments such as mining, energy, food and beverages, machinery, and textiles, as well as entities linked to the productive sector, industry unions, and development institutions.
Commitment to Emission Reduction
“We need to take actions that enable the reduction of pollutant gas emissions and the conscious consumption of water and energy. The search for sustainable energy alternatives needs to be a commitment of all, and the industrial sector is an important ally. By adopting sustainable practices, companies demonstrate their commitment to environmental causes and encourage their clients and partners to follow the same path. FIEPA, through the Pará Industry Fair, with all the visibility it has, is setting this example,” said Paulo Roberto Pinto, President Director of Norte Energia.
Since 2022, Norte Energia has been selling renewable energy certificates to organizations looking to reduce their emissions. In addition to Brazil, the company has stood out in the international market, negotiating with consumer units in Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, and Australia.
FIPA visitors will also have the opportunity to learn more about the environmental sustainability initiatives promoted by Norte Energia, including reforestation projects in the regions where the plant operates, in the municipalities of Altamira and Vitória do Xingu, and about the commercialization of renewable electricity.
