The New YouTube AI System Automatically Enhances Videos Between 240p and 720p, Turns Them into HD, Improves Navigation on TVs, and Expands Thumbnail Limit to 50 MB.
YouTube has begun a major visual update aimed at improving the quality of old and low-resolution videos. The platform introduced the “Super Resolution” feature, which uses artificial intelligence to automatically upscale videos below 1080p to HD quality. According to the company, the goal is to eventually extend support for videos up to 4K.
Creators will remain in control of their productions. YouTube stated that both original files and enhanced versions will be preserved, and there will be a clear option to disable the feature.
Viewers will also be able to choose between watching the original version or the enhanced version, which will be identified in the video settings.

Focus on Old and Low-Resolution Videos
The company emphasized that the new artificial intelligence system prioritizes the enhancement of videos with resolutions between 240p and 720p. The intention is to make older content more enjoyable on modern devices without altering its original visual characteristics.
Veronica Navarrete, a YouTube spokesperson, explained to The Verge that the automatic resolution increase is limited to this range, ensuring that videos already remastered in 1080p or higher are not altered.
This decision comes after complaints from content creators about unauthorized visual modifications in videos. Therefore, YouTube stressed that the new disable function is a direct response to the feedback received.
Although similar technologies already exist in televisions and devices like the Nvidia Shield TV, the platform’s approach differs through transparency and the freedom granted to creators.
New Features for Viewing on TVs
In addition to “Super Resolution,” YouTube introduced enhancements aimed at use on television screens, its “fastest-growing surface.”
The updates include immersive previews on the homepage, which facilitate navigation, and a contextual search that displays only videos from the searched channel.
The “Programs” layout has also been redesigned to offer better organization of series content.
The company stated that the goal of these changes is to value the work of creators and provide a smoother experience for those consuming content on large screens.
Another highlight is the integration with e-commerce. Soon, videos with tagged products will display QR codes, enabling viewers to access the item page directly.
YouTube is also testing tools for creators to highlight products at specific moments in videos, creating an interactive shopping experience.
Thumbnails in 4K and Larger Uploads
The platform has increased the thumbnail size limit from 2 MB to 50 MB, allowing for 4K images.
Additionally, it is conducting tests with selected creators to allow larger video uploads, anticipating the expansion to higher resolution formats compatible with the new AI technology.
The introduction of “Super Resolution” represents a significant advancement in YouTube’s evolution towards optimizing media with artificial intelligence.
By combining technological innovation with respect for creator autonomy, the platform reinforces its commitment to balancing image quality, user experience, and trust in the era of AI.
