Nissan Surprises With the Launch of the Plug-In Hybrid Frontier, Combining Robust Design, Advanced Technology, and Electrification in Its First Global Electric Pickup.
In an unexpected announcement, Nissan unveiled the new electrified Frontier, its first plug-in hybrid pickup, during the Shanghai Auto Show in China. The model, named Frontier Pro, has no direct relation to the Pro-X or Pro-4X versions sold in North America or to the models currently available in Brazil and Mexico.
Based on the Dongfeng Z9 — resulting from the Japanese automaker’s local partnership with Dongfeng — the new electric pickup marks a new chapter in Nissan’s electrification strategy in the utility segment.
Nissan’s First Plug-In Hybrid Pickup
Unlike the e-Power technology already used by the automaker, which combines an internal combustion engine with an extended range system, the electrified Nissan Frontier is officially the brand’s first plug-in hybrid.

With a TSI engine of up to 150 hp, a 420-liter trunk, a 10.1-inch VW Play infotainment system, and almost 7,900 units sold in April 2026, Volkswagen’s SUV remains the segment leader, leaving Creta, Tracker, and Compass behind.

The next generation of the Toyota Corolla could become almost unrecognizable next to the current model, according to projections, the images show a tapered front end, LED bar headlights, recessed door handles, and a new rear end with two light strips.
In other words, it can run exclusively in electric mode for up to 135 km (Chinese cycle), recharging its batteries both through the outlet and the combustion engine.
The powertrain consists of a 1.5 turbo gasoline engine with four cylinders paired with an electric motor integrated into the transmission — together, they deliver over 402 horsepower and 81.6 kgfm of torque.
With a design created locally at Nissan’s studio in Shanghai, the new electric Frontier focuses on aesthetic elements that refer back to the brand’s classics, such as the hood openings inspired by the iconic Datsun Hardbody.
The front features a light bar, while the rear can be equipped with a retractable electric bed cover, catering to an audience looking for sophistication and practicality.
Its dimensions are impressive: 5.52 meters in length, 1.96 m in width, and 1.95 m in height, with a robust wheelbase of 3.3 meters.
The weight ranges from 2,500 kg to 2,540 kg, depending on the version. All come with 18-inch wheels fitted with 265/65 tires.
Technologies and Comfort of a Premium SUV
The new Nissan hybrid Frontier also stands out for its cutting-edge technology package. The cabin combines robustness with luxury and features a 14.6-inch multimedia center and a 10-inch digital panel for the driver.
For an additional cost, the front seats can offer heating, ventilation, and even a massage function — a rare luxury even in high-end SUVs.
Another highlight is the V2L (Vehicle to Load) function, which allows the battery’s energy to power external devices, such as tools or household appliances, with an output of up to 6 kW, installed in the truck bed.
The off-road performance of the new electric pickup from Nissan has also been thoughtfully designed. The electrified Frontier features an independent double-wishbone front suspension and coil springs at the rear, along with an electromechanical locking rear differential.
There are also selectable traction modes between 4High and 4Low, and specific configurations for snow, performance, hybrid driving, and 100% electric.
Global Launch and Future in Brazil
Despite its debut in Chinese territory, Nissan confirmed that the new electric Frontier will not be restricted to the Asian market.
There are plans for expansion to other countries, although no confirmed dates yet. In Brazil, the current generation of the Frontier continues to be produced in Mexico and will keep offering the well-known turbodiesel engine.
However, the hybrid version emerges as a possible future addition to the portfolio, offering a powerful electrified alternative for an audience increasingly focused on sustainability.
The arrival of the electrified Nissan Frontier reinforces the Japanese automaker’s ambition to expand its electrified vehicle lineup also in the pickup segment, where the demand for technology and performance is growing.
Combining robustness, innovation, and energy efficiency, the new Frontier Pro promises to shake up the global market and, who knows, conquer Brazilian roads in the near future.
