The dispute between Donald Trump and Elon Musk exposed the great dependency of the United States on Elon Musk’s SpaceX. This company has become essential for critical areas of the US government, especially for the Armed Forces.

Trump suggested canceling contracts and subsidies for Musk’s companies. The businessman initially responded by threatening to reduce crucial SpaceX services but later backed down.

Trump used the Truth Social platform to criticize Musk’s government contracts.

He claimed that one way to save billions would be to cut these subsidies. Musk, for his part, attacked the government’s economic proposals, including the “Big Beautiful Bill” project, which could increase the deficit by US$ 2.4 trillion, according to the CBO.

After taking a temporary position to lead the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk resigned last week.

The billionaire posted on X that he could deactivate the Dragon capsule. This family of vehicles is vital for transporting astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).

NASA relies on it, as relations with Russia, also present on the station, have been strained since the invasion of Ukraine.

The impact of this dispute is still uncertain. A potential rupture of contracts with SpaceX could affect US national security, as the country uses its services for both launches and strategic communication.

The Dominance In Space Launches

SpaceX is currently the absolute leader in the global orbital launch market.

In 2024, there were 134 launches using the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets.

This represents 84% of all satellites launched into orbit worldwide, according to the American Enterprise Institute.

The US government relies directly on this infrastructure. In April, the US Space Force signed a contract of nearly US$ 6 billion with SpaceX for 28 launches.

ULA and Blue Origin received lower amounts for fewer missions, and the cost difference is evident. The reuse of SpaceX rockets guarantees much more competitive prices.

A strategic segment is support for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

This agency, linked to the Department of Defense and the CIA, is responsible for intelligence satellites. Just this year, five launches from SpaceX were dedicated to the NRO, in addition to six in the previous year. The company has also transported secret payloads, such as the X-37B mini-spaceplanes.

Another ongoing project is “Rocket Cargo,” which aims to use Starship to send cargo and even people quickly from one point to another on the planet via space.

This suborbital technology is seen as a futuristic alternative for emergency military operations.

In addition to rockets, SpaceX dominates satellite communications.

The Starlink constellation has become vital for the US Armed Forces. The government version, called Starshield, provides direct support for critical operations.

Mark Kitz, head of the Army’s communication program, stated that the presence of Starshield terminals is constant in bases and operations.

Since 2020, the Army has been using these resources to integrate new systems during modernization tests.

The Starlink and Starshield terminals are installed on aircraft, warships, and even on the presidential VH-92 Patriot helicopters.

The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is another example. The technology allows stable and secure connection, even on sensitive missions.

This system is valuable for being less vulnerable than traditional networks. It uses a large constellation of low-orbit satellites, making attacks and failures more difficult.

This robustness is important in light of increasingly frequent anti-satellite threats. The US government already recognizes space as a future active warfield.

Use In Conflicts And Global Operations

SpaceX’s network serves not only the US. Ukraine uses Starlink to control unmanned vehicles, including kamikaze boats.

The Ukrainian forces also rely on the network to maintain their communications on the war front.

Despite its usefulness, Musk has restricted the use of Starlink in some situations, which has generated criticism. This limitation showed how reliance on a private company can create risks.

The US government closely monitors these issues to avoid strategic problems.

Beyond wars, the network is used in emergency actions. Police operations and rescue missions also utilize Starlink in areas with poor infrastructure. This has consolidated SpaceX as a key player in modern communication.

Secret Capabilities And Advanced Radars

SpaceX is not just a satellite transporter. The company is building its own space surveillance network for the US Armed Forces.

This constellation serves for intelligence, reconnaissance, and monitoring moving targets.

The GMTI radar technology allows distinguishing static objects from moving targets.

Combined with SAR maps, which are detailed images of the terrain, it provides valuable data for tracking vehicles and troops. This capability is useful even under clouds, smoke, or at night.

With the expansion of these functions, SpaceX positions itself as a unique company. It delivers both transportation and the operation of complex systems in orbit.

What Is At Stake

The tension between Trump and Musk could affect a significant part of the American military structure.

Cancelling contracts with SpaceX would mean seeking more expensive and less efficient alternatives.

The country relies on the Falcon rockets, the Dragon capsule, and the Starlink network to maintain secure operations.

The most important thing is that SpaceX has built a technological advantage that is hard to match.

Even giants like Boeing and Lockheed Martin do not have the same pace of innovation and cost-effectiveness. Therefore, any rupture would be a strategic challenge.

The issue goes beyond the private sector. National security, space research, and military communications are directly linked to the future of SpaceX. It is a link that, so far, has proven essential for the power of the United States.

The dispute between Trump and Musk has brought to light a delicate problem. The dependence of the US government on SpaceX has grown to a point where alternatives are scarce.

The risk of interrupting the company’s services could jeopardize both NASA’s missions and the country’s defense.

The Dragon, Falcon rockets, and the Starlink network are now strategic pillars. Without them, the American presence in space and global communications would be significantly limited.

Therefore, the relationship between government and company needs to be adjusted, despite the political tensions, because the impact of a rupture would be profound.
