Created by Ângelo Duarte, a northeastern engineer graduated from ITA, PIX made Brazil a global reference in instant payments, even surpassing the USA in speed and adoption.
In 2020, Brazil witnessed one of the greatest financial revolutions in its history: the birth of PIX, a system that completely transformed the way millions of Brazilians move money. In just a few seconds, funds transfer from one account to another, 24 hours a day, every day of the week, including holidays. What few know is that this technology, which today inspires the world and positions Brazil at the forefront of instant payments, did not originate in Brasília, nor was it the idea of a politician or a private bank.
Behind PIX is the mind of a Ceará engineer, graduated from the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA), Ângelo Duarte, a man who left the interior of Ceará to lead one of the most successful innovations in the recent history of the global financial system.
From the Backlands to the Central Bank: The Trajectory of the Creator of PIX
Born and raised in a small town in the interior of Ceará, Ângelo Duarte always demonstrated talent with numbers and technology.

The journey that would lead him to the helm of one of the most ambitious projects at the Central Bank began with his education at ITA in São José dos Campos (SP), one of the most demanding educational institutions in the country — a breeding ground for engineers who often shape the future of Brazilian industry and innovation.
After working in different areas of the financial and technological sector, Ângelo was invited to join the team at the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB).
There, he became the head of the Department of Competition and Structure of the Financial Market, a strategic position that allowed him to propose a revolution: to create an instant payment system that functioned without intermediaries, without abusive fees, and with the same speed as the most advanced systems in the world.
The Birth of PIX: A Technological Leap and Financial Sovereignty
While countries like the United States and Germany were still crawling in instant payment solutions, Brazil surprised the world.
The PIX was officially launched on November 16, 2020, after more than two years of development under the technical leadership of Ângelo Duarte and his team.
The mission was bold: to create a public, secure, and freely accessible infrastructure for banks, fintechs, and cooperatives, a universal system. Unlike any other model in the West, PIX does not belong to a private company or a consortium of banks but to the Brazilian state, directly operated by the Central Bank.
“We wanted PIX to be more than just a transfer tool: it needed to be a platform for financial inclusion, capable of integrating millions of people into the banking system,” said Ângelo in one of his speeches at the Fórum da Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban).
The result was overwhelming: in less than two years, PIX surpassed all forecasts. Today, Brazil conducts more instant transactions than the combined total of the United States and the European Union. Just in 2024, the number of operations exceeded 44 billion transactions, moving over R$ 17 trillion, according to data from the Central Bank.
The Global Impact: The System That Made Brazilian Money Run Faster Than American Money
The speed and efficiency of PIX made Brazil a global reference. While the American payment system (FedNow) was launched only in 2023 and still faces limitations, the Brazilian model already operates with instant settlement in seconds, complete integration among institutions, and a cost close to zero for the user.
The magazine The Economist called PIX “the silent revolution that digitized the money of an entire country,” and the Financial Times described it as “the most successful instant payment system in the world in widespread adoption.”
This achievement is even more impressive considering the context: created by a northeastern native, graduated from a public institution, leading a national project within a state agency without banking lobby, without foreign capital, and without direct political interests.
Today, more than 150 countries are studying the Brazilian model. India, Mexico, Colombia, and even the United States are analyzing technical reports from the Central Bank of Brazil to adapt the format to their realities.
The Impact on Daily Life and the Real Economy
More than a technological advancement, PIX has become an instrument of social transformation. It allowed small merchants, farmers, freelancers, and micro-entrepreneurs to start receiving payments instantly, eliminating banking barriers and fees that previously made low-value transactions unfeasible.
Data from the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) indicates that PIX reduced the use of physical cash by up to 70% in the country and generated billions in savings in banking fees for the population.
The system also boosted e-commerce, the service sector, and digital consumption, besides serving as a basis for the implementation of Drex, the digital real that will be launched by the Central Bank in the coming years.
A Symbol of Brazilian Intelligence
Ângelo Duarte has not become a celebrity, but his legacy is comparable to that of the great inventors of the modern era. By 2025, PIX is used by more than 150 million Brazilians, with a transaction volume that surpasses all credit and debit cards in the country combined.
What began in the mind of a northeastern engineer is today a source of national pride and a symbol of Brazil’s ability to create solutions with global impact.
From a small municipality in Ceará to leading a financial revolution, Ângelo Duarte showed that innovation does not depend on origin, but on vision, competence, and courage.
He not only created PIX, he redefined the concept of money.
